About the Scarlet & Violet era

The Scarlet & Violet Series ran from the base set on March 31, 2023 to the split special expansion Black Bolt and White Flare on July 18, 2025, covering the Paldea region of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, its Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC and, at the end, a return to the Unova Pokémon of Generation V. Ten main expansions and six special sets released in English, drawn from the Japanese Scarlet & Violet era's expansions, enhanced expansion packs and High Class Packs.

The base set brought back Pokémon ex, the mechanic last seen in the EX and Diamond & Pearl years, and introduced Tera Pokémon ex, Terastallized Pokémon that take no damage from attacks while on the Bench. Obsidian Flames added type shifted Tera Pokémon ex, Paradox Rift added Ancient and Future cards and brought back Technical Machines, Temporal Forces brought back ACE SPEC cards, Stellar Crown introduced Stellar Tera Pokémon ex, and Journey Together brought Trainer's Pokémon back for the first time since EX Team Magma vs Team Aqua.

The rarity structure is what changed collecting. Every set carries Illustration rares, full art Pokémon in painted scenes, above them Special illustration rares for Pokémon ex and Supporters, and gold etched Hyper rares at the top. In most sets the Illustration rares outrun the Pokémon ex in the graded market, so cards like the Persian, Groudon and Gastly Illustration rares became chase cards in their own right, and Paldea Evolved carries 86 secret rares and Paradox Rift 84.

The special sets each had a hook: Scarlet & Violet 151 covered the original Kanto Pokémon in Pokédex order, Paldean Fates brought Shiny Pokémon to the series, Shrouded Fable introduced parallel foil and the Loyal Three, Prismatic Evolutions made the Eeveelutions Stellar Tera Pokémon ex with Poké Ball and Master Ball foil variants, and Black Bolt and White Flare split every Generation V Pokémon between two sets, the first split release in Western markets. The set hubs below carry every card list, the live chase and sealed prices and the editorial history of each release.

  • Pokémon ex and Tera Pokémon ex The base set brought back Pokémon ex and introduced Tera Pokémon ex. Obsidian Flames added type shifted Tera Pokémon ex, Stellar Crown introduced Stellar Tera Pokémon ex and Prismatic Evolutions gave the Eeveelutions the Stellar treatment.
  • Illustration rares lead the market Illustration rares, Special illustration rares and gold Hyper rares define the era's secret rare runs, and in most sets a painted Illustration rare of an ordinary Pokémon outranks the Pokémon ex in PSA 10 value.
  • Ancient, Future and ACE SPEC Paradox Rift introduced Ancient and Future cards for the Paradox Pokémon of Area Zero, Temporal Forces brought back ACE SPEC cards with the one per deck rule, and Shrouded Fable added the first ACE SPEC Stadium.
  • Six special sets Scarlet & Violet 151, Paldean Fates, Shrouded Fable, Prismatic Evolutions, Black Bolt and White Flare were sold through Elite Trainer Boxes, bundles, tins and collections rather than standard booster boxes, and Paldean Fates and 151 carry the largest secret rare counts of the era.
  • Japan first Every English set combined one or more Japanese releases, from the Scarlet ex and Violet ex pair through Shiny Treasure ex, Terastal Fest ex and the Glory of Team Rocket, usually two to three months after Japan.
