Surging Sparks

What Surging Sparks is

Surging Sparks is the eighth main expansion of the Scarlet & Violet Series, released in English on November 8, 2024 under the set code SSP. It has 191 cards in the numbered set plus 61 secret rares, for 252 cards in total. The set continues the Stellar Tera Pokémon ex introduced in Stellar Crown, and its running theme is the Terarium, the setting of The Indigo Disk, the second part of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero expansion for the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet video games.

Pikachu ex, a Stellar Tera Pokémon ex, is the face of the set, joined by Alolan Exeggutor ex leading a parade of Dragon Pokémon, Archaludon ex and Latias ex. The checklist holds nine Stellar Tera Pokémon ex and nine further Pokémon ex, eight ACE SPEC cards, 23 Illustration rares, 11 Special illustration rares covering Pokémon and Supporters, and six gold etched Hyper rares. Psychic is the most represented type at 33 cards.

The cards come from the Japanese Super Electric Breaker and Paradise Dragona expansions, the Stellar Tera Type Starter Sets and a handful of SV-P promotional cards. Every card but one carries the H regulation mark.

What makes Surging Sparks different

• The Pikachu ex set Pikachu ex appears as a Double rare (57), an Ultra rare (219), GIDORA's Special illustration rare (238) and a gold Hyper rare (247). The Special illustration rare is the most valuable card in the set by a wide margin and the card that carries it.
• Eight ACE SPEC cards Amulet of Hope, Brilliant Blender, Energy Search Pro, Megaton Blower, Miracle Headset, Precious Trolley, Scramble Switch and Enriching Energy sit inside the main numbering, seven Items and Tools plus one ACE SPEC Energy, so a master set of Surging Sparks has an unusually large ACE SPEC pull list.
• Dragons in the Terarium Alolan Exeggutor ex leads a Dragon type showing of 16 cards, and it receives a Special illustration rare (242, by Yuriko Akase) and a gold Hyper rare (248) alongside Pikachu.
• Four Supporter Special illustration rares Clemont's Quick Wit 243, Drayton 244, Jasmine's Gaze 245 and Lisia's Appeal 246 join the seven Pokémon Special illustration rares, an unusually Trainer heavy run.
• Prize Pack and jumbo variants Pikachu ex 57, Sylveon ex 86 and Eevee 143 exist as Play! Pokémon Prize Pack Series prints, and Latias 76 and Archaludon 130 exist as Surging Sparks stamped jumbo cards from the Latias ex Special Collection and Archaludon ex Box.
• Regional and gym stamps Surfer 187 was a Regionals 2024 promo with a separate staff version, and Magneton 59, Latias 76, Eevee 143, Counter Gain 169, Gravity Mountain 177 and Tera Orb 189 exist as Pokémon TCG Gym stamped Present Pack cards in Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.

How Surging Sparks arrived

Japan released the material as Paradise Dragona on September 13, 2024 and Super Electric Breaker on October 18, 2024, with the Stellar Tera Type Starter Sets supplying more cards. The English set combined them and released on November 8, 2024, following Stellar Crown in September and ahead of the 2024 McDonald's Collection in December.

Prerelease tournaments ran on the weekends of October 26 to 27 and November 2 to 3, 2024. Each Surging Sparks Build & Battle Box held a 40 card ready to play deck, four booster packs, a deck building tip sheet and a Pokémon TCG Live code card, with one of four SVP Black Star Promos: Gouging Fire (SVP 151), Chien-Pao (SVP 152), Magneton (SVP 153) or Indeedee (SVP 154), plus non holofoil Rabsca 14, Gouging Fire 38 and Tapu Koko 65 deck prints.

The release landed in the run up to the holidays, and the Hobby Co-Op Marketing Kit reflected it: a lenticular sign of Pikachu ex and Alolan Exeggutor ex, a Latias and Archaludon poster, a Pikachu window cling, a holiday window cling and 100 Pikachu holiday ornament card holders for store Christmas trees. Cards from the set kept appearing in later products, including cosmos holofoil Skeledirge 31, Togekiss 72, Rabsca 14 and Gastrodon 107 in the Destined Rivals blisters, and Pokémon Horizons logo versions of Fuecoco 29, Quaxly 50 and Terapagos 161 sold through Best Buy, GameStop and the Pokémon Center.

Surging Sparks products and what came in them

Two Elite Trainer Boxes launched with the set, both featuring Stellar Pikachu. Each holds 65 card sleeves, 45 basic Energy cards, a player's guide, six damage counter dice, a coin flip die, two Special Condition markers, four dividers and Magneton promo cards in the Illustration rare style (SVP Promo 159). The standard box has nine booster packs and one Magneton; the Pokémon Center box has eleven packs and two Magnetons, one with the Pokémon Center logo.

Single pack blisters carry Wooper (SVP 155) or Pachirisu (SVP 158), three pack blisters carry Quagsire (SVP 156) or Zapdos (SVP 157), all on cosmos holofoil, and every blister except the three pack version includes a Fuecoco coin. Premium checklane and Stage 1 blisters reuse the Chandelure, Alakazam, Sinistcha and Hisuian Arcanine lines from Twilight Masquerade with cosmos holofoil top cards. Display boxes hold 36 packs (18 in European half displays), the Booster Bundle holds six packs in two packaging styles, and a Collector's Kit added a poster, a playmat, one pack and a paper album.

Collecting and grading Surging Sparks

Pikachu ex 238 is the card that matters, and the live prices above show the gap between a raw copy and a PSA 10. Latias ex 239, Milotic ex 237 and the gold Pikachu ex 247 form the next tier, and the Illustration rares are led by Latios 203, Slakoth 212 and Ceruledge 197, which grade into real money from modest raw prices.

The Prize Pack Series prints of Pikachu ex 57, Sylveon ex 86 and Eevee 143 trade on a separate, thinner market from the pack pulled cards, so check the listing before comparing prices, and the jumbo Latias 76 and Archaludon 130 are display pieces rather than gradeable cards. The checklist below tracks Prize Pack and Jumbo rows separately.

Scarlet & Violet stock grades well when centered, but Special illustration rare textures chip at the edges and gold Hyper rares show surface marks under angled light, so inspect both before submitting. Sealed product is plentiful. The set was printed in large volume through the 2024 holiday season, so booster boxes, Elite Trainer Boxes and bundles are for opening, and the sealed table above shows what they trade for today.
