Paradox Rift

What Paradox Rift is

Paradox Rift is the fourth main expansion of the Scarlet & Violet Series, released in English on November 3, 2023 under the set code PAR. It has 182 cards in the numbered set plus 84 secret rares, for 266 cards in total, the largest secret rare run of any Scarlet & Violet set to that point. The set is built around the Paradox Pokémon of Area Zero, with Roaring Moon ex and Sandy Shocks ex representing the Ancient side and Iron Valiant ex and Iron Hands ex the Future side, while Garchomp ex and Mewtwo ex Terastallize into new types.

The checklist holds 20 Double rare Pokémon ex, seven of them Tera Pokémon ex, 34 Illustration rares, 28 Ultra rare full art etched Pokémon ex and Supporters, 15 Special illustration rares and seven gold etched Hyper rares. Water is the most represented type at 39 cards. Every card carries the G regulation mark.

The cards come from the Japanese Ancient Roar and Future Flash expansions, the Raging Surf subset and the Terastal Starter Sets. Ancient Roar has no Lightning or Metal Pokémon and Future Flash has no Darkness Pokémon, a split that shapes the type mix of the English set.

What makes Paradox Rift different

• Ancient and Future cards Paradox Rift introduced two new card variants for both Pokémon and Trainers. Ancient cards carry a layered strata background and favor heavy direct attacks on Pokémon that are hard to Knock Out; Future cards carry a pixelated background and lean on Abilities and attacks with extra effects. Each side has Trainer cards built to support it.
• Technical Machines return Technical Machine cards came back to the English game for the first time since Rising Rivals, reintroduced in the Japanese Raging Surf subset and printed here as Pokémon Tools. Technical Machine: Evolution 178 later appeared as a reverse holofoil Pokémon League promo.
• The Groudon set Nurikabe's Illustration rare Groudon 199 is the most valuable card in Paradox Rift, ahead of every Pokémon ex, and the 34 card Illustration rare run is the deepest in the set: OKACHEKE's Plusle 193 and Minun 194, Yuu Nishida's Morpeko 206, Yuka Morii's Aipom 211, Atsushi Furusawa's Joltik 196 and Tomokazu Komiya's Brute Bonnet 207 all grade into meaningful PSA 10 premiums.
• Fifteen Special illustration rares Nine Pokémon ex (245 to 253) and six Supporters (254 to 259) make up the Special illustration rare run. Jiro Sasumo's Altaria ex 253 leads it in the graded market, with Oswaldo KATO's Garchomp ex 245 and Oku's Golisopod ex 246 behind.
• Paradox Elite Trainer Boxes The Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant Elite Trainer Boxes each carry a full art foil promo, Scream Tail (SVP 065) or Iron Bundle (SVP 066), sourced from Ancient Roar and Future Flash. Pokémon Center versions add two packs and a stamped second promo.
• Cosmos Holofoil and stamped variants Latios 73, Palkia 40 and Zekrom 66 exist as Cosmos Holofoil 2-Pack Blister cards, Iron Moth 28 as GameStop, EB Games and Paradox Rift stamped reverse holofoils, Slither Wing 107 as a Best Buy stamped card, and Jirachi 126 as a Play! Pokémon Prize Pack print. Several of these variants outrun the pack pulled Pokémon ex in PSA 10.

How Paradox Rift arrived

The set was first glimpsed on August 11, 2023, when the Canadian Pokémon Center website briefly showed the Iron Valiant Elite Trainer Box, and it was revealed properly at the closing ceremony of the 2023 Pokémon World Championships on August 13, 2023. Japan released Ancient Roar and Future Flash together on October 27, 2023, two sets of 95 cards each that followed Ruler of the Black Flame, with the Raging Surf subset having arrived on September 22, 2023. The English set combined them with the Terastal Starter Set cards and released on November 3, 2023, after Scarlet & Violet 151 in September and two weeks before the Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic.

Retailers in the Play! Pokémon Prerelease Program could begin distributing Paradox Rift Build & Battle Boxes from October 20, 2023. Each box held a 40 card ready to play deck built around one of four SVP Black Star Promos, four booster packs, a deck building tip sheet and a Pokémon TCG Live code card. The promos were Chi-Yu (SVP 057), Iron Bundle (SVP 058), Xatu (SVP 059) and Aegislash (SVP 060), with non holofoil deck prints of Iron Moth 28, Chi-Yu 29, Golisopod 49, Xatu 72, Espathra 81 and Aegislash 134. The Build & Battle Stadium followed on November 17, 2023 and was the last product in that line.

Cards from the set kept appearing later: Fuecoco 23, Pumpkaboo 77 and Gourgeist 78 with the Pikachu jack-o'-lantern stamp in the Trick or Trade BOOster Bundle 2024, Snorunt 37 and Vanilluxe 45 with a snowflake symbol in the Holiday Calendar 2024, and Kingdra 32 and Lokix 122 as Cosmos Holofoil prints in the Twilight Masquerade blisters.

Paradox Rift products and what came in them

Two Elite Trainer Boxes launched with the set, Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant. Each holds nine booster packs, 65 card sleeves, 45 basic Energy cards, a player's guide, six damage counter dice, a coin flip die, two condition markers, four dividers and a code card, plus the Scream Tail or Iron Bundle full art promo. The Pokémon Center versions hold eleven packs and a second copy of the promo with a Pokémon Center stamp.

Single pack blisters carry Pineco (SVP 061) or Sinistea (SVP 062), three pack blisters carry Cetitan (SVP 063) or Arctibax (SVP 064), all on Cosmos Holofoil. Premium checklane blisters reuse the Tinkaton and Hydreigon lines from Paldea Evolved, and Stage 1 blisters carry the Ceruledge and Glimmora lines from the same set, with the top evolution on Cosmos Holofoil. Every blister but the three pack version includes a jumbo Pikachu coin. Display boxes hold 36 packs (18 in European half displays), the Booster Bundle holds six packs, and the Collector's Kit adds an album, a double sided poster and playmat and one pack. The Build & Battle Stadium held two Build & Battle Boxes, three more packs and 121 basic Energy cards.

Collecting and grading Paradox Rift

Paradox Rift is an Illustration rare set. Groudon 199 is the card that matters, and the live prices above show the gap between a raw copy and a PSA 10. Plusle 193, Minun 194, Morpeko 206, Aipom 211, Brute Bonnet 207 and Joltik 196 form the next group, all cheap enough raw that grading is the whole story. Among the Pokémon ex, Altaria ex 253, Garchomp ex 245 and Golisopod ex 246 lead, and the Ultra rare Maushold ex 233 holds its own.

The variant rows deserve attention. The Cosmos Holofoil Latios 73 from the 2-Pack Blister and the Prize Pack Jirachi 126 both sit near the top of the PSA 10 list despite ordinary pack prints that are worth little, and the reverse holofoil Snorlax Doll 175 and Toxel 69 behave the same way. The checklist below tracks each variant separately, so match the label before comparing prices.

Only two tracked singles clear a meaningful raw price, which makes Paradox Rift one of the cheaper Scarlet & Violet master sets to complete, with the graded premiums concentrated in the Illustration rares. Etched Special illustration rares and gold Hyper rares show edge wear under angled light, so inspect before submitting. Sealed product remains plentiful, so displays, Elite Trainer Boxes and bundles are for opening, and the sealed table above tracks what they trade for today.
