About Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic

What Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic is

Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic is a high end commemorative deck kit designed by the design firm nendo, released in English on November 17, 2023. It holds three 60 card decks built around the Kanto first partner Pokémon of the original Base Set, the Venusaur & Lugia ex Deck, the Charizard & Ho-Oh ex Deck and the Blastoise & Suicune ex Deck, each with 34 distinct cards numbered 1 to 34, for 102 cards in all. Every card is a foil.

Most of the cards are reprints from across the game's history, from Base Set Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur to Bill, Professor Oak, Computer Search, Rocket's Admin., Rare Candy and VS Seeker, with their text converted to modern wording and their play functionally unchanged. Six cards were created for the kit: Lugia ex 17, Ho-Oh ex 7 and Suicune ex 10 and the Pokémon Tools that partner them, Sun Seed 27, Scorching Charcoal 26 and Drops in the Ocean 21. The cards use a Star-Imprint Holofoil pattern first seen on Generation V coins, and none of them carry a regulation mark, so apart from the basic Energy they cannot be played in official tournaments.

The kit was announced at the Pokémon Presents on Pokémon Day 2023, and its deck lists were shown at the 2023 Pokémon World Championships in Yokohama.

What makes Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic different

  • Designed by nendo The kit was designed by nendo and packs its three decks with deck boxes, sleeves, a carrying case that unfolds into a two player playmat and a toolbox of stackable cone damage counters, ring shaped Special Condition markers and small metal orbs.
  • A ramp instead of a coin There is no coin. The toolbox holds a bowl with a spiraling ramp at its center, and the metal orbs roll down into one of four holes, two bordered in white for heads and two plain for tails.
  • Base Set starters in foil Charizard 3, Blastoise 3 and Venusaur 3 lead their decks as foil reprints of the Base Set cards, and Charizard 3 is the most valuable card in the kit in PSA 10 by a wide margin, with Blastoise 3 and Venusaur 3 in the top ten.
  • Three new ex Lugia ex 17, Ho-Oh ex 7 and Suicune ex 10 debuted in the kit alongside the Tools Sun Seed 27, Scorching Charcoal 26 and Drops in the Ocean 21, and the same six cards later appeared in the Combined Powers Premium Collection on February 23, 2024.
  • Trainers that grade Poké Ball 23, Pokémon Fan Club 22 and Super Rod 28 are among the highest valued cards in the kit in PSA 10, ranking ahead of most of the Pokémon despite costing very little raw.

How Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic arrived

The kit was announced at the Pokémon Presents on Pokémon Day 2023 and its deck lists were showcased at the 2023 World Championships in Yokohama. In Japan it was sold only through a lottery with three entry periods, the first from February 28 to March 10, 2023 with winners announced on April 26, 2023 and shipping from late October 2023, and later rounds shipping from early March 2024 and early August 2024.

The Traditional Chinese edition released on November 10, 2023, the English edition on November 17, 2023, two weeks after Paradox Rift on November 3, 2023 and ten weeks before Paldean Fates on January 26, 2024, and the Korean edition on December 16, 2023.

The six new cards reached a wider audience in the Combined Powers Premium Collection of February 23, 2024, but the foil reprints exist only in the kit.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic products

The cards were sold only as the complete kit, so there is no booster box or single deck product. Loose kits and their decks trade as a unit.

Collecting and grading Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic

Charizard 3 leads the kit in PSA 10 by a wide margin, with Poké Ball 23, Blastoise 3, Pikachu 8, Snorlax 16, Hitmonchan 12, Pokémon Fan Club 22, Mewtwo 14, Venusaur 3 and Gyarados 7 behind it, then Mr. Mime 13, Super Rod 28, Lugia ex 17, Hitmonlee 11 and Charmander 1. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.

Every card in the kit is a foil, so PSA 10 copies carry a wide premium over PSA 9 even on cards that cost very little raw, which is why Trainers such as Poké Ball 23 and Pokémon Fan Club 22 rank so high. Because the three decks share numbers from 1 to 34, check the deck symbol as well as the number when matching a card to the list.

Sealed kits are the only sealed form of the set, and they trade complete with their case and accessories.
