The EX Series ran from EX Ruby & Sapphire on July 18, 2003 to EX Power Keepers on February 14, 2007, sixteen main expansions covering the Hoenn region of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, the Kanto of FireRed and LeafGreen and the Holon region of the Japanese sets. It was the first series published in English by Pokémon USA after Wizards of the Coast lost the license, and its sets came from the Japanese ADV and PCG eras.
EX Ruby & Sapphire introduced an updated card design and Pokémon-ex, powerful Pokémon worth two Prize cards that gave the series its name. EX Sandstorm was the first Pokémon USA expansion to have a prerelease promo card. EX Team Magma vs Team Aqua introduced dual type Pokémon with a secondary type, EX Team Rocket Returns introduced Pokémon Star, the Gold Star cards showing Shiny Pokémon, and EX Emerald was the first English expansion to include holofoil basic Energy cards. EX Delta Species introduced Delta Species Pokémon with unexpected types and Holon's Pokémon that double as Special Energy, and the Holon story ran through EX Legend Maker, EX Holon Phantoms, EX Crystal Guardians and EX Dragon Frontiers.
EX Power Keepers closed the series in February 2007 from the Japanese World Champions Pack, which was itself released during the DP era, and the Diamond & Pearl Series followed in May 2007.
Collectors chase the Gold Star Pokémon above everything else in the era. The Gold Star Latias and Rayquaza of EX Deoxys, the Gold Star Torchic and Treecko of EX Team Rocket Returns, the Gold Star Gyarados of EX Holon Phantoms and the Gold Star Umbreon and Espeon of EX Unseen Forces lead the graded market, with the EX Dragon Frontiers Charizard behind them. The set hubs below carry every card list, the live chase and sealed prices and the editorial history of each release.
There are 16 published EX era sets in this hub.
The published EX era sets were released from July 18, 2003 to February 14, 2007.
The leading tracked chase cards in the EX era are Torchic from EX Team Rocket Returns, Mudkip from EX Team Rocket Returns, Latias from EX Deoxys.
