About EX Dragon
What EX Dragon is
EX Dragon is the third main expansion of the EX series, released on November 24, 2003 with 97 numbered cards plus three secret rares for 100 in total. It was built from the Japanese Rulers of the Heavens set of June 25, 2003, which had 54 cards. The set carries nine Pokémon ex, Ampharos, Dragonite, Golem, Kingdra, Latias, Latios, Magcargo, Muk and Rayquaza, and it is remembered above all for its three secrets: a Charmander, Charmeleon and Charizard line numbered 98 to 100 that revived the original Kanto starter for a new generation of collectors.
What makes EX Dragon different
- The secret Charizard line Charmander 98, Charmeleon 99 and Charizard 100 were printed as secret rares in a set otherwise about Hoenn, and the Charizard became one of the era's defining chase cards.
- Stamped and promo variants Gyarados carried the prerelease stamp, Flygon and Salamence were e-League Cosmos holos in 2004, Bagon appeared as a Black Star and Scrye Magazine promo, and Charizard 100 exists with a National Championships stamp.
EX Dragon products
Collecting and grading EX Dragon
The secret Charizard 100 leads the hub, followed by Dragonite ex, Rayquaza ex, the Latias and Latios ex pair, Ampharos ex and Kingdra ex. Reverse holos matter here too: TV Reporter, Grumpig and Torkoal reverse holos rank near the top of the checklist. EX series holos are prone to holo scratches and the ex cards to silvering on the edges, so a clean Charizard 100 in high grade commands a large premium over raw copies.
