About EX Ruby & Sapphire
What EX Ruby & Sapphire is
EX Ruby & Sapphire is the first main expansion of the EX Series, released in English on June 18, 2003 and built from the Japanese Expansion Pack of January 31, 2003 that opened the ADV era. It has 109 cards: 14 holofoil rares from Aggron 1 to Wailord 14, the rares, uncommons and commons that follow, the eight Pokémon-ex from Chansey ex 96 to Sneasel ex 103 and six basic Energy cards. It is the first set with Generation III Pokémon and the first with Pokémon-ex.
Pokémon-ex were significantly stronger Pokémon with holofoil borders, and knocking one out gave the opponent two Prize cards instead of one. The set also brought an updated card design with a silver artwork window, smaller linear Energy symbols and a thicker bottom border kept for the e-Reader Dot-Code strip, and every card in the main set also exists as a reverse holofoil.
What makes EX Ruby & Sapphire different
- Mewtwo ex Mewtwo ex 101 is the most valuable card in the set in PSA 10 by a wide margin, with Hitmonchan ex 98, Scyther ex 102, Sneasel ex 103 and Magmar ex 100 also in the top fifteen.
- The Hoenn starter reverse holos The reverse holofoil Treecko 76 ranks second in the set in PSA 10, and the reverse holo Ralts 68, Torchic 74 and Mudkip 59 all rank in the top twelve, ahead of most of the Pokémon-ex.
- New rules with the new Series The set arrived with rule changes that still stand: retreating was limited to once per turn, and the player going first could not draw or play a Supporter on their opening turn.
How EX Ruby & Sapphire arrived
Expansion Pack released in Japan on January 31, 2003 as the first ADV era set, the first Japanese expansion sold alongside pre-constructed Half Decks. The English EX Ruby & Sapphire followed on June 18, 2003, five weeks after Skyridge on May 12, 2003 closed the Wizards of the Coast run, and it was the first expansion distributed by Nintendo of America. EX Sandstorm followed on September 18, 2003. It launched with the Ruby and Sapphire Theme Decks built around Blaziken and Swampert.

Early EX Series cards suffer from print lines and soft holofoil surfaces, so PSA 10 copies of the holos, the Pokémon-ex and especially the reverse holos are scarce and carry a very wide premium over PSA 9. Holo, non holo, reverse holo and no e-Reader code prints are graded and priced separately. Sealed EX Ruby & Sapphire is scarce, and the sealed table above tracks what boxes, packs and blisters trade for today.
