Neo Genesis is the first expansion of the Neo Series and the eighth English set, released on December 16, 2000 under the set code N1 with 111 cards and no secret rares. It was the first set to feature the Generation II Pokémon of Pokémon Gold and Silver, more than 60 of them new to the card game, with Lugia as its centerpiece and the Johto starters Meganium, Typhlosion and Feraligatr among its holofoil rares.
The set rewrote the rules. It introduced the Darkness and Metal types and their Special Energy cards, Baby Pokémon that evolve into Basic Pokémon, and the Pokémon Tool subclass of Trainer cards, permanent attachments that echoed the held item mechanic of the games. It also introduced an updated card design with a circular Evolution box, HP in black text instead of red, the Evolution stage below the HP and a background graphic behind Weakness and Resistance.
The checklist holds 41 commons, 35 uncommons and 35 rares, with Grass the most represented type at 20 cards. Ken Sugimori illustrated 50 of the 111 cards. The set comes from the Japanese Gold, Silver, to a New World..., released on February 4, 2000 with 96 cards, and it was printed in 1st Edition and Unlimited runs.
Japan released Gold, Silver, to a New World... on February 4, 2000, ten months before the English set. Neo Genesis followed on December 16, 2000, two months after Gym Challenge closed the original series and six months before Neo Discovery. Other language versions followed in February 2001.
The set launched with two Theme Decks, Hotfoot, built on Jumpluff with Grass and Fire Pokémon, and Cold Fusion, built on Kingdra with Water and Lightning Pokémon, each with a metal coin, rulebook, damage counters and card list. Jumbo prints of Chikorita 54, Cyndaquil 57 and Totodile 81 were later sold in First Partner Packs.
Wizards of the Coast printed the set in 1st Edition and Unlimited runs, and the 1st Edition holofoils, above all Lugia, Typhlosion, Slowking and Pichu, became the graded market's focus as the Neo Series aged into a vintage era.
Neo Genesis was sold in booster packs and booster boxes in both 1st Edition and Unlimited print runs, in two pack blisters and in the Hotfoot and Cold Fusion Theme Decks. The sealed table above tracks each of them, with 1st Edition boxes and packs listed separately from Unlimited.
Lugia 9 is the reference card, in Unlimited and above all in 1st Edition, where high grades are scarce and even PSA 9 copies command serious money. Typhlosion 17, Slowking 14, Pichu 12, Azumarill 2, Meganium 10, Feraligatr 4 and 5, Heracross 6 and Skarmory 13 make up the rest of the holofoil market, and the live prices above list 1st Edition and Unlimited copies as separate variants, so match the label before comparing.
Several PSA 10 figures on the chase list rest on a handful of sales, and the gap between PSA 9 and PSA 10 on these holofoils is enormous because Neo era holofoils scratch and chip easily; a PSA 9 is the realistic target for most raw copies. Check the holofoil surface for scratches, the corners for whitening and the back for the print quality issues common to the era before submitting.
Sealed Neo Genesis is a vintage asset. Unlimited booster boxes are expensive and 1st Edition boxes far more so, and the sealed table above tracks what boxes, packs and the two Theme Decks trade for today.

Neo Genesis has 111 cards and no secret rares: 41 commons, 35 uncommons and 35 rares including the holofoil rares, printed in 1st Edition and Unlimited runs.
Lugia 9 leads, with Slowking 14, Typhlosion 17, Pichu 12, Azumarill 2, Heracross 6, Meganium 10 and Feraligatr 4 and 5 behind it, and 1st Edition copies trade far above Unlimited. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.
The highest value card currently tracked for Neo Genesis is Lugia #9 at $327,644 in PSA 10.
A sealed Unlimited Neo Genesis booster box currently tracks at $28,785, with 1st Edition boxes listed separately in the sealed table above.
The Darkness and Metal types with their Special Energy, Baby Pokémon, the Pokémon Tool subclass of Trainers and a new card design with a circular Evolution box and black HP text.
The Japanese card showed a Sentret suckling from a Miltank's udder, which was considered inappropriate for the English audience, so the English print shows cans of Moomoo Milk in a barn with a Cleffa.
Gold, Silver, to a New World..., a 96 card set released in Japan on February 4, 2000 as the first expansion of the neo era.
