The Neo Series ran from Neo Genesis on December 16, 2000 to Neo Destiny on February 28, 2002, four English expansions that brought the Generation II Pokémon of Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal to the card game. All four came from the Japanese neo era and were published by Wizards of the Coast, and Neo Revelation's Japanese source, Awakening Legends, was the first Japanese expansion released by The Pokémon Company.
Neo Genesis reshaped the game. It introduced the Darkness and Metal types, Baby Pokémon and the Pokémon Tool subclass of Trainer cards, cards that attach permanently to a Pokémon in play in a nod to the held items of Gold and Silver. Its holofoil Lugia is the era's signature card, and Slowking, Typhlosion and Feraligatr keep it among the most collected sets of the period. Neo Discovery, in June 2001, drew on Unown and the Ruins of Alph, with Umbreon and Espeon as its chase holofoils.
Neo Revelation, in September 2001, introduced Shining Pokémon, Basic Pokémon in alternate coloring limited to one per name in a deck, and its Shining Gyarados and Shining Magikarp were the first. Neo Destiny, in February 2002, expanded the idea with a run of Shining Pokémon secret rares led by Shining Charizard and Shining Mewtwo, and introduced Light Pokémon, cards with white and gold frames, higher HP and supportive attacks, as the mirror of Team Rocket's Dark Pokémon; Dark Gengar and Dark Espeon appear in the same set.
Collectors chase the Shining Pokémon above all: Shining Gyarados from Neo Revelation and Shining Charizard and Shining Mewtwo from Neo Destiny lead the era's graded market, with Neo Genesis Lugia, Neo Discovery Umbreon and the Neo Revelation Legendary beasts Suicune and Raikou behind them. As with the original era, 1st Edition and Unlimited rows trade apart. The set hubs below carry every card list, the live chase and sealed prices and the editorial history of each release.
