About Gym Challenge
What Gym Challenge is
Gym Challenge is the seventh main expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, released in English on October 16, 2000 by Wizards of the Coast. It has 132 cards with 20 holofoil rares, from Blaine's Arcanine 1 to the Gym Leader Trainer cards Blaine 17, Giovanni 18, Koga 19 and Sabrina 20, and it combines the Japanese Challenge from the Darkness of June 25, 1999 with the rest of Leaders' Stadium. The set completes the Gym block begun by Gym Heroes, featuring Blaine, Sabrina, Koga and Giovanni alongside Team Rocket.
Its holofoils include Blaine's Charizard 2, Erika's Venusaur 4, Giovanni's Gyarados 5 and Persian 8, Misty's Golduck 12 and Gyarados 13, Rocket's Mewtwo 14 and Zapdos 15 and Sabrina's Alakazam 16. Two cards were redrawn for the English release: Koga's Ninja Trick originally carried a manji symbol, and Misty's Tears originally showed Misty nude.
What makes Gym Challenge different
- Blaine's Charizard Blaine's Charizard 2 is the most valuable card in the set in PSA 10 in its 1st Edition print and ranks in the top seven unlimited, with an error version whose Roaring Flames attack uses the wrong Fighting type symbol.
- Misty's Golduck The 1st Edition Misty's Golduck 12 ranks second in the set in PSA 10, ahead of the 1st Edition Erika's Venusaur 4, Giovanni's Persian 8 and Rocket's Mewtwo 14.
- Rocket's Secret Experiment The 1st Edition Rocket's Secret Experiment 120 ranks in the set's top fifteen in PSA 10, a Trainer card outranking most of the Gym Leader holos.
How Gym Challenge arrived
Challenge from the Darkness released in Japan on June 25, 1999, and the English Gym Challenge followed on October 16, 2000, after Gym Heroes on August 14, 2000 and before Neo Genesis on December 16, 2000 opened the Neo Series. It launched with four Theme Decks named for Sabrina, Koga, Blaine and Giovanni, each with an exclusive Alakazam coin, and Brock's Vulpix 37 was later issued as a W stamped Top Deck Magazine promo.
Gym Challenge products
Gym Challenge was sold in booster packs and booster boxes in 1st Edition and unlimited print runs and in four Theme Decks. The sealed table above tracks all of them.
Collecting and grading Gym Challenge
The 1st Edition Blaine's Charizard 2 leads the set in PSA 10, with the 1st Edition Misty's Golduck 12, Erika's Venusaur 4, Giovanni's Persian 8, Rocket's Mewtwo 14 and Blaine's Arcanine 1 behind it, then the unlimited Blaine's Charizard 2 and the 1st Edition Sabrina's Gengar 29 and Giovanni's Gyarados 5. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.
Wizards of the Coast holofoils from 2000 show print lines, holo scratches and edge whitening readily, so PSA 10 copies of the 1st Edition holos are scarce and carry a very wide premium over PSA 9. 1st Edition and unlimited prints are graded and priced separately, as are the error Blaine's Charizard and the W stamped Brock's Vulpix. Sealed Gym Challenge is scarce, and the sealed table above tracks what boxes, packs and Theme Decks trade for today.
