About Rising Rivals

What Rising Rivals is

Rising Rivals is the second main expansion of the Platinum Series, released in English on May 16, 2009 and built from the Japanese Bonds to the End of Time of December 26, 2008. It has 111 cards in the numbered set plus 3 secret rares, the Pikachu 112, Flying Pikachu 113 and Surfing Pikachu 114, and a separate run of six Rotom cards numbered RT1 to RT6, for 120 cards in all. The nine Pokémon LV.X run from Alakazam E4 LV.X 103 to Snorlax LV.X 111.

The set is based on Pokémon Platinum and the Sinnoh League. It introduced two new kinds of Pokémon SP: the GL Pokémon owned by the Gym Leaders, such as Luxray GL 9, and the E4 Pokémon owned by the Elite Four, such as Gallade E4 LV.X 106. The Rotom run carries the Fan, Frost, Heat, Mow and Wash forms from RT1 to RT5 and the Supporter Charon's Choice at RT6.

What makes Rising Rivals different

  • The Pikachu secret rares Flying Pikachu 113 is the most valuable card in the set in PSA 10, with Surfing Pikachu 114 and Pikachu 112 also in the top ten, all three printed as secret rares above the 111 card set.
  • Snorlax LV.X Snorlax LV.X 111 ranks second in the set in PSA 10, well clear of Flygon LV.X 105, Gallade E4 LV.X 106 and Hippowdon LV.X 107, which fill the next three places.
  • The Rotom run The five Rotom forms at RT1 to RT5 sit outside the main numbering, and Wash Rotom RT5, Mow Rotom RT4 and Frost Rotom RT2 all rank in the set's top fifteen in PSA 10.

How Rising Rivals arrived

Bonds to the End of Time released in Japan on December 26, 2008, and the English Rising Rivals followed on May 16, 2009, ahead of Supreme Victors on August 19, 2009. It launched with the Cutting Edge and Drill Point Theme Decks, the first to include Pokémon SP, with Cosmos Holofoil Gallade 20 and Rhyperior 32 exclusive to them. Blisters followed on May 20, 2009, and the Two Pack Blister's Rotom promo was the first card with the Cracked Ice Holofoil treatment, which collectors called the Rotom holo until it was named officially.

Rising Rivals products

Rising Rivals was sold in booster packs, booster boxes, two Theme Decks and blisters. The sealed table above tracks boxes, packs and blisters.

Collecting and grading Rising Rivals

Flying Pikachu 113 leads the set in PSA 10, with Snorlax LV.X 111 second, then Flygon LV.X 105, Gallade E4 LV.X 106, Hippowdon LV.X 107, Mismagius GL LV.X 110, the Jirachi 7 and Flygon 5 holos, Pikachu 112 and Surfing Pikachu 114. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.

Platinum era holofoils show print lines and edge wear readily, so PSA 10 copies of the LV.X cards and the three Pikachus are scarce and carry a very wide premium over PSA 9. Reverse holos, the Theme Deck holos and the Prerelease Tropius 52 are graded and priced separately. Sealed Rising Rivals is scarce, and the sealed table above tracks what boxes, packs and blisters trade for today.
