About Team Rocket
What Team Rocket is
Team Rocket is the fifth main expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game in English, released on April 24, 2000. It has 82 cards in the numbered set plus 1 secret rare, Dark Raichu 83, the first secret card in an English set, and in Japan it was released as Rocket Gang on November 21, 1997 with 65 cards. Every other language edition arrived in July 2000.
The set introduced Dark Pokémon, Team Rocket's mistreated Pokémon, with brown and black artwork windows, higher attack damage and lower HP than their normal counterparts. Fourteen Dark holofoils run from Dark Alakazam 1 to Dark Weezing 14, with non holofoil versions of the same cards at 18 to 31, and Rocket's Sneak Attack 16 and Rainbow Energy 17 were the first Trainer and Energy cards printed as holofoils. Team Rocket was also the first English set not sold in cardboard backed blister packs.
What makes Team Rocket different
- The Dark Dragonite error Dark Dragonite 5 exists in a missing holofoil error print, and that error is the most valuable card in the set in PSA 10, ahead of the 1st Edition Dark Charizard 4 and the 1st Edition Dark Dragonite 5.
- The first secret rare Dark Raichu 83 is numbered beyond the set's 82 cards, the first secret rare in an English set, and it ranks in the top ten in both its 1st Edition and unlimited prints.
- Dark Charizard Dark Charizard 4 is the second most valuable card in the set as a 1st Edition and a top ten card unlimited, and its non holofoil print at 21 also reaches the top fifteen as a 1st Edition.
How Team Rocket arrived
Rocket Gang released in Japan on November 21, 1997, and the English Team Rocket followed on April 24, 2000, nine weeks after Base Set 2 on February 24, 2000 and sixteen weeks before Gym Heroes on August 14, 2000. It launched with the Devastation and Trouble Theme Decks, built around Dark Weezing and Dark Arbok with an exclusive Meowth coin, and Dark Gyarados 8 served as the Pokémon League Prerelease promo.

The Dark Dragonite 5 error leads the set in PSA 10, with the 1st Edition Dark Charizard 4, the 1st Edition and unlimited Dark Dragonite 5, the 1st Edition Dark Blastoise 3 and Dark Magneton 11, the unlimited Dark Charizard 4 and Dark Raichu 83 in both prints behind it. The 2000 holofoils scratch easily and the dark frames show edge wear plainly, so PSA 10 copies of the Dark holofoils are scarce and 1st Edition, unlimited and error prints are graded and priced separately.
