About Japanese Neo Discovery

What Japanese Neo Discovery is

Crossing the Ruins... is the second expansion of the Japanese neo era, released on July 7, 2000 as the original print of the set that became the English Neo Discovery of June 1, 2001. It has 56 cards plus one secret card, the Dark Raichu, with 19 holofoil rares, 19 uncommons and 18 commons. The set is based on Pokémon Gold and Silver and features Generation II Pokémon, Unown and the Ruins of Alph, whose glyphs frame the set's theme.

The holofoils carry the two new Eevee evolutions Umbreon and Espeon alongside Tyranitar, Houndoom, Scizor, Politoed, Kabutops, Wobbuffet, Hitmontop, Ursaring, Magcargo, Forretress, Smeargle, Beedrill, Butterfree, Yanma and Poliwrath. The English Neo Discovery grew to 75 cards because Wizards of the Coast added non holofoil prints of the holo rares, so the Japanese set is the tighter original, with every rare a holofoil.

What makes Japanese Neo Discovery different

  • Umbreon and Espeon Umbreon 197 is the most valuable card in the set in PSA 10 by a wide margin, with Espeon 196 third, the original prints of the two Eeveelutions introduced in Generation II.
  • The secret Dark Raichu Dark Raichu 26 is the set's one secret card and ranks second in PSA 10, a Team Rocket style Pokémon placed in a set otherwise built around the Ruins of Alph.
  • Every rare a holo With no non holo rares, 19 of the 56 cards are holofoils, and the Houndour 228 and Eevee 133 pre evolutions still reach the set's top fifteen in PSA 10.

How Japanese Neo Discovery arrived

Crossing the Ruins... followed the Japanese Neo Genesis of February 4, 2000 on July 7, 2000 and was itself followed by Awakening Legends, the Japanese Neo Revelation, on November 23, 2000. Its cards reached English on June 1, 2001 as Neo Discovery, the second Neo Series expansion, with the Brain Wave and Wallop Theme Decks. The Japanese set is tracked here as its own hub because its prints are the first prints of every Neo Discovery card.

Japanese Neo Discovery products

Crossing the Ruins... was sold in Japanese booster packs and booster boxes. The sealed table above tracks both.

Collecting and grading Japanese Neo Discovery

Umbreon 197 leads the set in PSA 10, with Dark Raichu 26 second, then Espeon 196, Tyranitar 248, Butterfree 12, Houndoom 229, Houndour 228, Wobbuffet 202, Kabutops 141 and Politoed 186. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.

The hub tracks Japanese neo era cards by National Pokédex number rather than a printed set number, because the 2000 cards carry no collector numbers. Japanese holofoils from 2000 show holo scratches and edge wear readily, so PSA 10 copies of the Umbreon, Espeon and Dark Raichu carry a very wide premium over PSA 9. Sealed Crossing the Ruins... is very scarce, and the sealed table above tracks what boxes and packs trade for today.
