Japanese Neo Revelation

What Japanese Neo Revelation is

Awakening Legends is the third expansion of the Japanese neo era, released on November 23, 2000 as the original print of the set that became the English Neo Revelation of September 21, 2001. It has 57 cards: 17 holofoil rares, 19 uncommons, 19 commons and the two Shining Pokémon, Shining Magikarp and Shining Gyarados. It was the first expansion released by The Pokémon Company, and it is built around the Legendary beasts Raikou, Entei and Suicune that emerge from the Burned Tower, with Ho-Oh and Celebi alongside them.

The set introduced Shining Pokémon, Basic Pokémon with unusual coloring and holofoil across the artwork, limited to one copy per name in a deck. Its holofoils carry Ho-Oh, Celebi, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Houndoom, Aerodactyl, Ampharos, Kingdra, Starmie, Blissey, Crobat, Jumpluff, Misdreavus, Magneton, Delibird and Porygon2. The English Neo Revelation grew to 66 cards by adding non holofoil prints and placing the two Shining cards above the 64 card set.

What makes Japanese Neo Revelation different

• The first Shining Pokémon Shining Gyarados 130 is the most valuable card in the set in PSA 10 by a wide margin, with Shining Magikarp 129 second, the original prints of the first two Shining Pokémon ever made, and a Fan Club promo print of Shining Magikarp is tracked separately above them.
• The Legendary beasts and Ho-Oh Ho-Oh 250 is the top regular holofoil in PSA 10, with Suicune 245, Entei 244 and Raikou 243 all in the set's top ten alongside Houndoom 229 and Celebi 251.
• No Theme Decks Neo Revelation was the first expansion sold without Theme Decks in English, so the Japanese packs and boxes are the only sealed products for the set.

How Japanese Neo Revelation arrived

Awakening Legends followed the Japanese Neo Discovery, Crossing the Ruins..., of July 7, 2000 on November 23, 2000 and was itself followed by Darkness, and to Light..., the Japanese Neo Destiny, on April 20, 2001. Its cards reached English on September 21, 2001 as Neo Revelation, the third Neo Series expansion and the first without preconstructed Theme Decks, which Wizards of the Coast attributed to poor deck sales. The Japanese set is tracked here as its own hub because its prints are the first prints of the Shining Pokémon.

Awakening Legends was sold in Japanese booster packs and booster boxes. The sealed table above tracks both.

Collecting and grading Japanese Neo Revelation

Shining Gyarados 130 leads the set in PSA 10, with Shining Magikarp 129 second, then Ho-Oh 250, Houndoom 229, Celebi 251, Suicune 245, Aerodactyl 142, Entei 244, Raikou 243, Ampharos 181, Blissey 242, Kingdra 230 and Starmie 121. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.

The hub tracks Japanese neo era cards by National Pokédex number rather than a printed set number, because the 2000 cards carry no collector numbers. Japanese holofoils from 2000 show holo scratches and edge wear readily, so PSA 10 copies of the two Shining Pokémon carry a very wide premium over PSA 9. Sealed Awakening Legends is very scarce, and the sealed table above tracks what boxes and packs trade for today.
