About the Neo era

The neo era carried the Pokémon Card Game into Generation II. Gold, Silver, to a New World..., the Japanese Neo Genesis, released on February 4, 2000 with 96 cards and was the first set to feature Pokémon from Pokémon Gold and Silver. It introduced the Darkness and Metal types, Baby Pokémon and the Pokémon Tool subclass of Trainer cards, a nod to the held item mechanic of the games, and it brought an updated card design with a circular Evolution box. The English Neo Genesis followed on December 16, 2000.

Three more expansions completed the era. Crossing the Ruins..., the Japanese Neo Discovery, arrived on July 7, 2000 with 56 cards built around Unown and the Ruins of Alph. Awakening Legends, the Japanese Neo Revelation, followed on November 23, 2000 with 57 cards featuring the Legendary beasts, and it was the first expansion released by The Pokémon Company. It introduced Shining Pokémon, Basic Pokémon with unusual coloring limited to one per name in a deck. Darkness, and to Light..., the Japanese Neo Destiny, closed the era on April 20, 2001 with 113 cards and introduced Light Pokémon, cards with a white and gold artwork window, higher HP than usual and attacks that often aid the other Pokémon in play, the counterpart to the Dark Pokémon of Rocket Gang.

The English versions lagged by ten months to a year: Neo Discovery released on June 1, 2001, Neo Revelation on September 21, 2001 and Neo Destiny on February 28, 2002, and Neo Discovery was expanded again with non holofoil prints of its holofoil rares.

The Shining Pokémon are the collecting story of the era. Shining Mewtwo and Shining Charizard from Darkness, and to Light... lead the Japanese market, with Shining Gyarados and Shining Magikarp from Awakening Legends, Shining Tyranitar, Shining Raichu and Shining Celebi from Darkness, and to Light... behind them. Lugia from Gold, Silver, to a New World..., Umbreon from Crossing the Ruins... and Dark Gengar from Darkness, and to Light... round out the top ten. The set hubs below carry every card list, the live chase prices and the editorial history of each release.
