About Japanese Expedition

What Japanese Expedition is

Japanese Expedition, sold as the Base Expansion Pack, is the first expansion of the e-Card era in Japan, released on December 1, 2001 with 128 cards split evenly into 32 commons, 32 uncommons, 32 rares and 32 holo rares. It introduced the e-Card design with a dot code strip for the e-Reader, wider left and bottom borders, and it carried forward the split of Pokémon Power into Poké-Power and Poké-Body that Pokémon Web had made two months earlier. Technical Machine cards debuted here. The English Expedition Base Set of September 15, 2002 expanded the pool to 165 cards. Japanese packs carried 1st Edition marks, and those prints lead the hub.

What makes Japanese Expedition different

  • Poké-Power and Poké-Body Pokémon Power ran as two classes here: Poké-Powers that need activation and Poké-Bodies that stay on unless blocked, a structure first seen in Pokémon Web that the game kept for a decade.
  • Kanto holos in 1st Edition Charizard, Blastoise, Mew, Mewtwo, Gengar and Dragonite holos all appear, and the 1st Edition prints of each sit at the top of the hub.

Collecting and grading Japanese Expedition

The 1st Edition holo Mew leads the hub, followed by 1st Edition Gengar, Charizard, Dragonite, Mewtwo, Blastoise and Tyranitar, then the non holo rare Mewtwo and Gengar and the Pichu. The hub tracks no sealed rows for this set today. e-Card era holos scratch easily and the dot code strip along the edge shows wear quickly, so a clean 1st Edition Charizard or Mew in high grade is far scarcer than the print run suggests.
