About McDonald's Original Minimum Pack

What McDonald's Original Minimum Pack is

The McDonald's Original Minimum Pack is a Japanese promotional set handed out in McDonald's restaurants in 2002, from January 26 to February 24. Each Happy Meal came with a small booster of six cards that always included at least one holofoil card and at least one basic Energy card. The cards use the e-Card design and work with Nintendo's e-Reader, since the set arrived just after the Base Expansion Pack opened the e-Card era in Japan. The checklist covers Kanto and Johto starters and favorites such as Pikachu, Slowpoke, Marill and Larvitar, and each of the six Energy cards exists in holo and non holo form.

What makes McDonald's Original Minimum Pack different

  • Holo in every pack Every six card pack carried a holofoil card, so the starter holos are far more common than a regular set's holos, yet clean copies are scarce because they went to children.
  • Two Energy variants The six basic Energy cards come in holofoil and non holofoil versions, which is why the set's total card count runs above the 18 Pokémon in the hub.

Collecting and grading McDonald's Original Minimum Pack

The holo Squirtle leads the hub, followed by holo Pikachu, Charmander, Slowpoke, Chikorita and Larvitar, then Bulbasaur, Totodile, Marill, Vulpix, Cyndaquil and Mareep. Because these were meal toys, most surviving copies show handling wear, and the e-Card dot code strip on the edge chips easily, so a clean holo Squirtle or Pikachu is the real challenge of the set.
