About Generations
What Generations is
Generations is a special expansion of the XY Series, released in English on February 22, 2016 under the set code GEN to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Pokémon. It has 83 cards in the core set plus the Radiant Collection, a separately numbered subset of 32 cards from RC1 to RC32, 115 in total. The core set gathers Generation I Pokémon from the Japanese Starter Pack of February 27, 2016 and a number of Japanese XY-P promos, while the Radiant Collection comes from the PokéKyun Collection concept pack released in Japan on January 29, 2016.
The Radiant Collection was the second of its kind after the one in Legendary Treasures, and it is where the set's value sits: Pikachu RC29, Sylveon-EX RC32, Flareon-EX RC28, Gardevoir-EX RC30 and M Gardevoir-EX RC31 are the most valuable cards in Generations. The core set carries 14 Pokémon-EX including Venusaur-EX, Charizard-EX and Blastoise-EX and their Mega Evolutions, with the holofoil Articuno 25 and Zapdos 29 by Ryo Ueda among the ultra rares.
Generations packs were never sold in booster boxes. Each ten card pack held 8 cards from the core set and 2 from the Radiant Collection, and packs came only inside 20th anniversary products, the Mythical Pokémon Collections, the Red & Blue Collections, the Generations Elite Trainer Box and the Super Premium Collection Mew and Mewtwo.
What makes Generations different
- The Radiant Collection The 32 card RC subset, two per pack, holds the set's chase cards: the Pikachu RC29, Sylveon-EX RC32 and Flareon-EX RC28 lead the market, with Gardevoir-EX RC30, M Gardevoir-EX RC31, Flareon-EX RC6 and Jirachi RC13 behind them.
- Sold only in anniversary products Packs came in the eleven Mythical Pokémon Collections, the four Red & Blue Collections, the Generations Elite Trainer Box and the Super Premium Collection Mew and Mewtwo, never in booster boxes.
- Kanto's starters as Megas M Venusaur-EX 2, M Charizard-EX 12 and M Blastoise-EX 18 lead a core set of 14 Pokémon-EX built on Generation I, with Ninetales-EX, Jolteon-EX, Vaporeon-EX and Leafeon-EX alongside.
- The Japanese Starter Pack In Japan the core cards came as a Starter Pack that echoed the original starter deck, a randomized deck in two sealed sections with either M Venusaur-EX or M Charizard-EX, plus a Blastoise version for the Kamex Mega Battle in May 2016.
- A year long release The Mythical Pokémon Collection Mew opened the products on February 22, 2016 and the Meloetta collection closed them in December 2016, mirroring the monthly Mythical Pokémon distributions of the anniversary year.
How Generations arrived
Generations released in English on February 22, 2016, nineteen days after BREAKpoint on February 3, 2016 and ten weeks before Fates Collide on May 2, 2016. In Japan the PokéKyun Collection released on January 29, 2016 and the Starter Pack on February 27, 2016.
The first product was the Mythical Pokémon Collection Mew on February 22, 2016, and a new Mythical collection followed through the year, ending with Meloetta in December 2016. The four Red & Blue Collections, each with a sculpted figure or a jumbo card depending on the country, arrived through 2016. The Generations Elite Trainer Box, the first for a special expansion, sold online from July 1, 2016 with ten packs, a Shaymin-EX promo in the Radiant Collection style and 65 black and gold sleeves, and reached other retailers from September 2016, the same month as the Super Premium Collection Mew and Mewtwo.
Holofoil stamped versions of Pikachu 26, Magikarp 22, Clefairy 50 and Meowth 53 were handed out at 20th anniversary events in several countries.
Generations products
Generations was sold only through 20th anniversary products, so there is no booster box. The sealed table above tracks each one.
Collecting and grading Generations
The Radiant Collection leads. Pikachu RC29 is the most valuable card in the set, with Sylveon-EX RC32 and Flareon-EX RC28 close behind, then Gardevoir-EX RC30, M Gardevoir-EX RC31, Flareon-EX RC6, Jirachi RC13, Sylveon-EX RC21 and Charizard RC5. From the core set, M Charizard-EX 12, the holofoil Gengar 35 and Articuno 25 rank highest. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.
The Radiant Collection full arts have textured surfaces and the sparkle background shows scratches easily, so PSA 10 copies of Pikachu RC29, Sylveon-EX RC32 and Flareon-EX RC28 carry a very wide premium over PSA 9 and raw, and with only two Radiant Collection cards per pack the full art RC cards are far scarcer than the core Pokémon-EX.
Sealed Generations means Mythical Pokémon Collections, Red & Blue Collections and Elite Trainer Boxes rather than booster boxes, and the sealed table above tracks what each one and loose packs trade for today.
