About Dark Explorers
What Dark Explorers is
Dark Explorers is the fifth main expansion of the Black & White Series, released in English on May 9, 2012. It has 108 cards in the numbered set plus 3 secret rares, 111 in total, and it is built from the Japanese Dark Rush expansion of December 16, 2011, 76 cards. Generation V Pokémon and Pokémon-EX carry the set, with Darkrai EX 63 as its face.
Six Pokémon-EX have full art prints at 103 to 108: Entei EX, Kyogre EX, Raikou EX, Groudon EX, Darkrai EX and Tornadus EX. The three secret rares are Gardevoir 109, Archeops 110 and Pokémon Catcher 111, the first Item card ever printed as a secret rare, marked by a holofoil Poké Ball in the middle of its text box. The set's logo echoes the Darkness type symbol set inside a hexagon.
What makes Dark Explorers different
- The first Item secret rare Pokémon Catcher 111 opened the door to secret rare Item cards, a slot that later sets filled with gold Trainers.
- Eeveelutions as promos Flareon 12, Vaporeon 25, Jolteon 37, Espeon 48, Umbreon 60 and Eevee 84 were handed out as Crosshatch Holofoil championship promos in the 2012 to 2013 season, and the stamped Umbreon 60 and Eevee 84 rank among the set's most valuable cards.
- A misplaced pair Vanillite and Vanillish were printed ahead of Ducklett and Swanna in the card order, out of Pokédex sequence, and Dark Explorers was the first English set whose Prerelease promo was a Black Star Promo rather than a card from the set.
How Dark Explorers arrived
Dark Rush released in Japan on December 16, 2011, and the English Dark Explorers followed on May 9, 2012, thirteen weeks after Next Destinies on February 8, 2012 and five weeks before the McDonald's Collection 2012 on June 15, 2012. It launched with the Raiders and Shadows Theme Decks, built around Cofagrigus 52 and Zoroark 71 in Cracked Ice Holofoil, and with blisters that differed by region: international Three Pack Blisters carried a Cracked Ice Luxray or Krookodile, while North American blisters carried the Luxray, Krookodile, Persian and Lucario lines.
Dark Explorers products
Dark Explorers was sold in booster packs, booster boxes, two Theme Decks and blisters. The sealed table above tracks boxes, packs, blisters and the Sampling Pack.
Collecting and grading Dark Explorers
The full art Groudon EX 106 leads the set in PSA 10, with the secret rare Gardevoir 109, the Regional Staff Umbreon 60 and the full art Darkrai EX 107 behind it, then the regular and Regional Umbreon 60, the reverse holofoil Eevee 83 and Eevee 84, the full art Tornadus EX 108, Kyogre EX 104 and Raikou EX 105 and the secret rare Archeops 110. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.
PSA 10 copies of the full arts and the Umbreon carry a wide premium over PSA 9, and the stamped championship promos are graded and priced separately from the set prints. Sealed Dark Explorers is scarce, and the sealed table above tracks what boxes, packs and blisters trade for today.
