About BREAKthrough
What BREAKthrough is
BREAKthrough is the eighth main expansion of the XY Series, released in English on November 4, 2015 and built from the Japanese Blue Shock and Red Flash dual expansions of September 26, 2015 that opened the XY BREAK era. It has 162 cards in the numbered set plus 2 secret rares, the Mewtwo EX 163 and 164 by Mitsuhiro Arita, with Mewtwo at its center: Mewtwo EX 61 and 62, M Mewtwo EX 63 and 64 in the X and Y forms, and their full arts from 157 to 160.
The set introduced Pokémon BREAK, an additional stage of Evolution printed horizontally in gold artwork and placed sideways over the Pokémon it evolves, adding HP and an attack or Ability while keeping everything the previous stage had. Six appear here, from Chesnaught BREAK 12 to Noivern BREAK 113.
What makes BREAKthrough different
- Two Mewtwo EX secret rares Mewtwo EX 163 and 164, each in a different pose by Mitsuhiro Arita, are the two most valuable regular cards in the set in PSA 10, with the full art Mewtwo EX 157 and M Mewtwo EX 160 behind them.
- The first Pokémon BREAK BREAKthrough introduced the horizontal gold Pokémon BREAK cards, and an Inverted Back Error print of Chesnaught BREAK 12 is tracked at the very top of the chase list as an error card.
- Gengar and Snorlax The reverse holo Gengar 60 ranks in the set's top six in PSA 10 and its regular holo in the top ten, while the reverse holo Snorlax 118 and Pikachu 48 also reach the top twelve.
How BREAKthrough arrived
Blue Shock and Red Flash released in Japan on September 26, 2015, and the English BREAKthrough followed on November 4, 2015, thirteen weeks before BREAKpoint on February 3, 2016. It launched with the Burning Spark and Night Striker Theme Decks, two Elite Trainer Boxes for Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y, blisters with Sableye, Celebi and Jirachi promos and a Launch Display, with a Collector Chest and pin blisters following on November 18, 2015.
