About Legendary Shine Collection
What Legendary Shine Collection is
Legendary Shine Collection is the second and final subset of the Japanese XY era, released as a Concept Pack on July 18, 2015 with the set code CP2. It has 27 cards with no secret cards: two Pokémon-EX, Pikachu EX 8 and Hoopa EX 12, both by Hitoshi Ariga, 10 rares, 3 uncommons and 12 commons. Every card in the subset carries a gloss coating with a special holofoil inset, and each pack held four cards instead of the usual five.
The release coincided with the Japanese release of the eighteenth Pokémon movie, The Archdjinni of the Rings: Hoopa, and most of the Pokémon in the subset appear in that film: the Legendary dragons and their allies summoned by Hoopa, Reshiram 2, Palkia 5, Zekrom 9, Dialga 17, Latias 18, Latios 19, Black Kyurem 20, White Kyurem 21, Regigigas 23 and Arceus 24, alongside the Kalos starters Chespin 1, Fennekin 3 and Froakie 6, Dedenne 10, Meowth 22 and Hoopa's companions. Most of its cards later reached English inside BREAKthrough.
What makes Legendary Shine Collection different
- Every card shines The gloss coating and holofoil inset run through all 27 cards, commons included, so the subset has no plain print at all, a treatment that gives it the Shine in its name.
- Pikachu EX leads Pikachu EX 8 by Hitoshi Ariga is the most valuable card in the set in PSA 10, well clear of Latios 19, Zekrom 9 and Latias 18, while the movie's title Pokémon Hoopa EX 12 sits in the top twelve.
- The movie's Legendaries The ten rares are the Legendary Pokémon of the Hoopa film, and eight of them, Latios 19, Zekrom 9, Latias 18, Reshiram 2, Palkia 5, Arceus 24, Dialga 17 and White Kyurem 21, fill the set's top nine in PSA 10 with Pikachu EX.
How Legendary Shine Collection arrived
Legendary Shine Collection released in Japan on July 18, 2015, four weeks after Bandit Ring on June 20, 2015 closed the Japanese XY expansions and ten weeks before Blue Shock and Red Flash on September 26, 2015 opened the XY BREAK era, timed to the Japanese premiere of The Archdjinni of the Rings: Hoopa. Most of its cards later reached English inside BREAKthrough. The Japanese subset is tracked here as its own hub because its glossy prints exist only in this release.
Legendary Shine Collection products
Legendary Shine Collection was sold in four card Japanese booster packs and booster boxes. The sealed table above tracks both.
Collecting and grading Legendary Shine Collection
Pikachu EX 8 leads the set in PSA 10, with Latios 19 second, then Zekrom 9, Latias 18, Reshiram 2, Palkia 5, Arceus 24, Dialga 17, White Kyurem 21 and Black Kyurem 20. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.
The gloss coating shows scratches and fingerprints under grading light more readily than a standard card, so PSA 10 copies of the Pikachu EX and the dragons carry a wide premium over PSA 9 despite the small set. A complete set of 27 is a compact project, and even the commons carry the holofoil inset that collectors buy the subset for. Sealed Legendary Shine Collection is scarce, and the sealed table above tracks what boxes and packs trade for today.
