About POP Series 5

What POP Series 5 is

POP Series 5 is a special set of 17 cards released through Pokémon Organized Play events and affiliated products between March 2007 and September 2007. It was the last promotional set of the EX Series made for the Organized Play program, and it carried some of the last Japanese promotional cards to reach English, with Mitsuhiro Arita illustrating six of its 17 cards.

The set is remembered for two cards. Espeon 16 and Umbreon 17 are Gold Star cards, the English versions of the last two elusive Eeveelution Gold Stars, which had only existed as Japanese PLAY promotional cards after Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon debuted in EX Power Keepers. The Umbreon Gold Star is one of the most valuable English cards of any era, and the Espeon Gold Star sits close behind it.

The rest of the set holds Ho-Oh 1, Lugia 2 and Mew δ 3 as its rares, Pikachu 12 and 13, the Charmander 10 and Charmeleon 5 line, Bill's Maintenance 6 and Rare Candy 7 among the Trainers, and three Energy cards, with Ho-Oh on the booster design.

What makes POP Series 5 different

  • The Umbreon and Espeon Gold Stars Espeon 16 and Umbreon 17 are Gold Star cards that completed the English Eeveelution Gold Star set after EX Power Keepers, and the Umbreon Gold Star is the most valuable card in the set by a wide margin, with Espeon second.
  • The last EX Series POP set POP Series 5 closed the EX Series promotional sets for Organized Play, and its cards were among the last Japanese promos to be translated into English before the Diamond & Pearl Series took over.
  • Holofoils from Value Packs Ho-Oh 1, Lugia 2 and Mew δ 3 and the commons Pikachu 12, Pelipper δ 14 and Zangoose δ 15 were also released as holographic versions in the DP Value Pack 1 and DP Gift Packs sold at Wal-Mart, Target and Toys R Us in September and October 2007.
  • Only 17 cards With 17 cards, 4 of them rares and 2 Gold Stars, POP Series 5 is one of the smallest sets in the game, and every card was handed out at events or packed into value products rather than sold in boxes.
  • The Pikachu and Mew holos The holographic Pikachu 12 and Mew δ 3 from the Value Packs rank third and fourth in the set, ahead of the regular Mew δ and the holographic Lugia 2.

How POP Series 5 arrived

POP Series 5 began distribution in March 2007, two weeks after EX Power Keepers on February 14, 2007 closed the EX Series, and ran through September 2007, with the DP Black Star Promos beginning on May 1, 2007 alongside it. The Organized Play program handed the packs out at leagues and tournaments through the transition from the EX Series to the Diamond & Pearl Series.

The Eeveelution Gold Stars had appeared in Japan as PLAY promotional cards, and POP Series 5 gave Espeon and Umbreon their only English prints after EX Power Keepers had carried Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon. In September 2007 the DP Value Pack 1 at Wal-Mart and Target added Cosmos Holofoil Mew δ and Pikachu, and in October 2007 the DP Gift Packs at Target and Toys R Us added Cosmos Holofoil Ho-Oh and Lugia and Mirror Holofoil Pelipper δ and Zangoose δ.

The set is tracked here as its own hub because the Gold Stars and the Value Pack holofoils trade as some of the most valuable Organized Play cards ever released.

POP Series 5 products

POP Series 5 was never sold in booster boxes. Packs were distributed through Organized Play events, and holographic versions of six cards came in DP Value Packs and Gift Packs. The sealed table above tracks loose packs.

Collecting and grading POP Series 5

The Umbreon Gold Star 17 leads the set by a wide margin, with the Espeon Gold Star 16 second, then the holographic Pikachu 12, the holographic Mew δ 3, the holographic Lugia 2, the regular Mew δ 3, Pikachu 13, Charmeleon 5, Charmander 10 and Bill's Maintenance 6. An error print of Mew δ 3 also trades as its own collectible. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.

Gold Star cards were handed out in thin Organized Play packs and rarely sleeved, so PSA 10 copies of Umbreon and Espeon are scarce and carry a very wide premium over PSA 9, and even the regular commons of the set grade far above their raw prices because so few were kept mint.

Sealed POP Series 5 packs are tracked in the sealed table above.

Why are the POP Series 5 Espeon and Umbreon Gold Stars so valuable?

Which POP Series 5 cards have holographic versions?

Ho-Oh 1, Lugia 2, Mew δ 3, Pikachu 12, Pelipper δ 14 and Zangoose δ 15, released as holographic versions in the DP Value Pack 1 and DP Gift Packs in September and October 2007.
