About POP Series 1
What POP Series 1 is
POP Series 1 is the first special set released through Pokémon Organized Play events and affiliated products, distributed from September 2004 to August 2005. It has 17 cards: 5 rares, 5 uncommons, 5 commons and 2 Pokémon-ex, Armaldo ex 16 and Tyranitar ex 17, with Blaziken on the booster design. The rares are the Hoenn starters Blaziken 1, Sceptile 4 and Swampert 5 alongside Metagross 2 and Rayquaza 3.
Pokémon Organized Play conceived the series as an incentive to attend leagues and events. Instead of a single promo, players received two card booster packs from a small set, with the odds of a rare card set very low so that completing the set took many visits. Pokémon USA planned a new series every six to twelve months, each exclusive to Organized Play for six months, though POP Series 1 stayed available for a full year.
What makes POP Series 1 different
- Holographic versions All 7 rares also exist as Cosmos Holofoil versions released through blisters, Value Boxes and Collector's Tins from 2005 to 2007, and the holographic Tyranitar ex 17, Sceptile 4, Rayquaza 3, Swampert 5 and Blaziken 1 hold the top five places in the set in PSA 10.
- Two card packs Each POP Series 1 pack held only two cards, and the rare slot was deliberately scarce, so PSA 10 copies of the non holographic rares are far rarer than a 17 card set suggests.
- The first of nine POP Series 1 opened the run of Organized Play sets that followed it, and its boosters later turned up in card kits and at Pokémon events outside Organized Play.
How POP Series 1 arrived
POP Series 1 began distribution in September 2004, days after EX FireRed & LeafGreen on August 30, 2004 and ahead of EX Team Rocket Returns on November 8, 2004, and it ran through August 2005. Its rares were reprinted as Cosmos Holofoils in the EX Unseen Forces blisters of November 2005, the EX Legend Maker blisters of March 2006, the EX Holon Phantoms blisters of May 2006, a Target Value Box in October 2006 and the 2007 Spring Collector's Tins, and a second Rayquaza 3 print with a 2006 copyright came in a limited blister in May 2007.
POP Series 1 products
POP Series 1 was never sold in booster boxes. Packs were handed out at leagues and events, and the sealed table above tracks loose packs.
Collecting and grading POP Series 1
The holographic Tyranitar ex 17 leads the set in PSA 10, with the holographic Sceptile 4, Rayquaza 3, Swampert 5 and Blaziken 1 behind it, then the regular Rayquaza 3, the holographic Metagross 2, the regular Tyranitar ex 17, Blaziken 1 and Sceptile 4, Larvitar 11 and Swampert 5. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.
Organized Play packs were thin and rarely sleeved, so PSA 10 copies of every card are scarce and the gap between PSA 9 and PSA 10 is very wide, even on the commons. Holographic and regular prints are graded and priced separately.
