Phantasmal Flames

What Phantasmal Flames is

Phantasmal Flames is the second main expansion of the Mega Evolution Series, released worldwide on November 14, 2025 under the set code PFL. It has 94 cards in the numbered set and 36 secret rares, for 130 cards in total, which makes it a compact set by modern standards. The central Pokémon is Mega Charizard X ex, and the set also carries Mega Gengar ex, Mega Heracross ex, Mega Lopunny ex, Mega Sharpedo ex and Mega Diancie ex, six Mega Evolution Pokémon ex in all, alongside four regular Pokémon ex.

The set focuses on Fire and Darkness Pokémon, with Darkness the most common type in the checklist at 20 cards. Its cards come from the Japanese Inferno X expansion together with the MEGA Starter Set Mega Gengar ex and the MEGA Starter Set Mega Diancie ex, which is why the two Mega Evolution Pokémon ex from those starter decks appear here as Double rares.

The secret rare section is where the value sits: 13 Illustration rares, 17 Ultra rares covering the Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, Pokémon ex, Trainers and the Ignition Energy, five Special illustration rares and a single Mega Hyper Rare, the gold Mega Charizard X ex 130. Nearly all cards carry the I regulation mark.

What makes Phantasmal Flames different

• Four prints of Mega Charizard X ex The headline card appears as a Double rare (13), an Ultra rare (109), a Special illustration rare (125) and the set's only Mega Hyper Rare (130). The 13, 109 and 130 prints are illustrated by takuyoa and the 125 Special illustration rare by danciao, so the two top chase cards are different artworks, not the same picture in different foils.
• One Mega Hyper Rare Unlike sets with a run of gold cards, Phantasmal Flames has exactly one Mega Hyper Rare, and it is the Charizard. That concentrates the set's graded demand on a single number, 130, in a way few modern sets match.
• The first Mega Gengar ex and Mega Diancie ex Both arrived in Japan through starter sets and enter the English game here as Double rares 56 and 41, which is why neither has an Ultra rare or Special illustration rare print in this set.
• Five Special illustration rares, one of them a Trainer Mega Charizard X ex 125, Rotom ex 126, Mega Sharpedo ex 127 and Mega Lopunny ex 128 are joined by Dawn 129, illustrated by Atsushi Furusawa, the only Supporter in the set to receive a Special illustration rare.
• A long list of retailer stamps Suicune 26 exists with a GameStop stamp (USA), an EB Games stamp (Australia and New Zealand) and as a Suicune Knockout Collection cosmos holofoil; Reshiram 17 has a Barnes & Noble and Hot Topic gift with purchase stamp; Genesect 8 has a Phantasmal Flames stamped gift with purchase version; and Oddish 1, Gloom 2 and Vileplume 3 exist as pixel cosmos holofoils from the Vileplume Enhanced Two Pack Blister.
• Prerelease and deck exclusives Moltres 14, Zacian 45, Flygon 53 and Toxtricity 68 exist as non holofoil Build & Battle Box prints, with Zacian and Toxtricity also appearing in the Mega Diancie ex and Mega Gengar ex Mega Battle Decks. Dawn 87 was a cosmos holofoil participation prize in the 2025 to 26 Ultra Ball League Season 3 in Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.

How Phantasmal Flames arrived

Japan received the material first as Inferno X, and the two Mega Evolution starter sets (Mega Gengar ex and Mega Diancie ex) supplied the remaining Mega Evolution Pokémon ex. The English set followed the first Mega Evolution expansion, released September 26, 2025, and continued the series' job of reintroducing Mega Evolution to the card game after a long absence.

Prerelease tournaments ran on the weekends of November 1 to 2 and November 8 to 9, 2025. Players received a Phantasmal Flames Build & Battle Box with a 40 card ready to play deck, four booster packs, a deck building tip sheet and a Pokémon TCG Live code card, plus one of four MEP Black Star Promos: Ceruledge (MEP 014), Zacian (MEP 015), Flygon (MEP 016) or Toxtricity (MEP 017). Stores were allowed to sell extra boxes at the events.

The worldwide release on November 14, 2025 came with the Elite Trainer Box, a Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box, a six pack Booster Bundle, several blister formats and 36 pack display boxes, with 18 pack half displays sold in European countries. Retailer gift with purchase promotions followed in the United States, Australia and New Zealand, which is where the stamped Suicune, Reshiram and Genesect variants come from. A Mini Portfolio with one booster pack arrived on March 27, 2026.

Phantasmal Flames products and what came in them

The Elite Trainer Box features Mega Charizard X and holds nine booster packs, 65 card sleeves, 40 basic Energy cards, a player's guide, six damage counter dice, a competition legal coin flip die, a plastic coin, six dividers, a Pokémon TCG Live code card and a full art foil Charcadet promo (MEP Promo 022) that was first released in Japan's Inferno X. The Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box adds two more booster packs and a second Charcadet promo carrying a Pokémon Center logo stamp.

Single pack blisters carry Cottonee (MEP 018) or Whimsicott (MEP 019) and three pack blisters carry Sneasel (MEP 020) or Weavile (MEP 021), all printed on smooth cosmos holofoil paper. Premium checklane blisters reuse the Blaziken and Hydrapple evolution lines from Destined Rivals. Every blister includes a code card, and all but the three pack blisters include a jumbo Mega Diancie coin. The Booster Bundle holds six packs, and the Mega Charizard X ex Ultra Premium Collection sits at the top of the product line.

Collecting and grading Phantasmal Flames

This is a one card market with a supporting cast. Mega Charizard X ex 130 is the card graders submit, and the Special illustration rare 125 is the card collectors pay the most for raw, so the two prints behave differently and the live prices above show both. Below the Charizards the set thins out quickly: only a handful of singles clear meaningful raw prices, and most Illustration rares are affordable pick ups.

Modern Mega Evolution stock grades well when centered, but the textured Special illustration rares and the gold Mega Hyper Rare show edge chipping and surface scuffs under light, so inspect both before submitting. The stamped retailer promos (Suicune 26 GameStop and EB Games, Reshiram 17 Barnes & Noble and Hot Topic) are cheap raw and carry real graded premiums, which makes them the sensible value submissions from this set.

Sealed is current product. The set is less than a year old and print runs are ongoing, so treat booster boxes, Elite Trainer Boxes and bundles as something to open rather than something to store for scarcity, and let the sealed table above tell you what the market is actually paying today.
