About Ruler of the Black Flame
What Ruler of the Black Flame is
Ruler of the Black Flame is the third main expansion of the Japanese Scarlet & Violet era, released on July 28, 2023 under the set code SV3. It has 108 cards in the numbered set plus 33 secret rares, 141 in total, and every card carries the G regulation mark. Its English equivalent is Obsidian Flames, released on August 11, 2023 with 230 cards.
The set and Obsidian Flames were the first to feature Tera Pokémon ex whose types differ from their usual types. A type shifted Tera Pokémon ex still uses its usual Energy for attacks but takes the Weakness and Resistance of its new type, and the Darkness type Charizard ex 66 is the example the set is built around, alongside the Fire type Eiscue ex, the Lightning type Tyranitar ex and the Psychic type Vespiquen ex. The numbered set holds 8 Pokémon ex in all, with Glimmora ex, Absol ex, Revavroom ex and Pidgeot ex completing the roster.
The secret rares from 109 to 141 hold the illustration rares, the full art ex and Supporters, the special illustration rares and the gold ultra rares, and Charizard ex appears in four prints: the regular 66, the full art 125, the special illustration rare 134 and the gold 139.
What makes Ruler of the Black Flame different
- Type shifted Tera Pokémon ex This was the first set with Tera Pokémon ex of a different type from their usual one. Charizard ex is Darkness, Eiscue ex is Fire, Tyranitar ex is Lightning and Vespiquen ex is Psychic, each attacking with its usual Energy but carrying the new type's Weakness and Resistance.
- The black flame Charizard Charizard ex appears at 66, 125, 134 and 139, and the special illustration rare 134 is the most valuable card in the set with the gold 139 and the full art 125 behind it.
- Charizard before Absol In the Japanese set Charizard ex 66 comes before Absol ex 73 as the usual type and Pokédex order requires, while the English Obsidian Flames placed its Absol ex and Charizard ex prints at 214 and 215 in the other order.
- Pidgeot ex Pidgeot ex 89 is the set's Colorless Stage 2 ex, and its special illustration rare 136 is a top ten card in the set alongside the Charizard prints.
- Art rare commons on top The Cleffa 113, Gloom 109, Ninetales 110 and Lechonk 120 illustration rares rank among the set's top cards, ahead of most of the full art ex.
How Ruler of the Black Flame arrived
Ruler of the Black Flame released in Japan on July 28, 2023, six weeks after Pokémon Card 151 on June 16, 2023 and eight weeks before Raging Surf on September 22, 2023, following the Snow Hazard and Clay Burst pair and preceding Ancient Roar and Future Flash.
The English Obsidian Flames followed on August 11, 2023, the same day as the Traditional Chinese edition, and combined Ruler of the Black Flame with the ex Special Set, the ex Start Decks, two Japanese promo cards, leftover cards from Triplet Beat, Snow Hazard and Clay Burst and two reprints from Scarlet & Violet. A Korean edition released on August 25, 2023, a Thai edition on September 29, 2023 and an Indonesian edition on October 27, 2023.
The type shifted Tera Pokémon ex introduced here became a fixture of the era, and the Darkness type Charizard ex became the era's signature Charizard.
Ruler of the Black Flame products
Ruler of the Black Flame was sold in booster packs and booster boxes. The sealed table above tracks both.
Collecting and grading Ruler of the Black Flame
The special illustration rare Charizard ex 134 leads the set by a wide margin, with the gold Charizard ex 139, the Cleffa 113 and Gloom 109 illustration rares, the full art Charizard ex 125, the special illustration rare Pidgeot ex 136, the Ninetales 110 and Lechonk 120 illustration rares and the Pidgey 118 art rare behind it. The regular Charizard ex 66 and the full art Tyranitar ex 122 also rank in the top fifteen. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.
Japanese print quality keeps PSA 10 rates high, so graded premiums are modest across most of the set and concentrate on Charizard ex 134. Because Obsidian Flames spread the same Charizard to English collectors, the Japanese special illustration rare trades as the original print of the era's best known Charizard.
Sealed Ruler of the Black Flame remains available, and the sealed table above tracks what boxes and packs trade for today.
