About Double Crisis

What Japanese Double Crisis is

Double Crisis was released in Japan on January 30, 2015 as a Concept Pack, the first subset of the XY era, under the full title Magma Gang VS Aqua Gang: Double Crisis. All 34 cards belong to Team Magma or Team Aqua, the villains of the Hoenn region. The card design was reworked for the theme: Pokémon show their team's logo in the attack box and a grunt portrait beside the Pokédex entry, and Trainer cards carry the logo in the description box. Team Aqua's Kyogre EX and Team Magma's Groudon EX, both illustrated by nagimiso, are the two double rares. The English Double Crisis followed on March 25, 2015.

What makes Japanese Double Crisis different

Sold in boxes in Japan only Japanese Double Crisis packs came in ordinary booster boxes, while the English set was sold only in blisters with seven card packs, which makes the Japanese box the only sealed box for this set.
Team themed frames Every card carries Team Magma or Team Aqua branding, from the logo in the attack box to the grunt headshot, so the set looks unlike any regular XY expansion.

Collecting and grading Japanese Double Crisis

Team Magma's Groudon EX and Team Aqua's Kyogre EX lead the hub in both 1st Edition and unlimited prints. The rest of the set is inexpensive, so collectors often complete it as a 34 card master set with 1st Edition copies, and Team Magma's Aggron, the two Mightyena and Team Aqua's Sharpedo are the mid tier cards. The team logos and grunt portraits make print alignment easy to judge, so centering matters more than usual when a copy is graded.
