About Great Encounters
What Great Encounters is
Great Encounters is the fourth main expansion of the Diamond & Pearl Series, released in English on February 13, 2008. It has 106 cards, with 11 holofoil rares from Blaziken 1 to Togekiss 11 and four Pokémon LV.X closing the set: Cresselia LV.X 103, Darkrai LV.X 104, Dialga LV.X 105 and Palkia LV.X 106. Darkrai appears twice among the holos, at 3 by Masakazu Fukuda and at 4 by Ryo Ueda, beside Cresselia 2, Pachirisu 5 and Rotom 7.
Great Encounters mostly contains cards from the Japanese Moonlit Pursuit of October 26, 2007. Because of the six month gap between the fourth and fifth Japanese expansion blocks, Moonlit Pursuit and Dawn Dash were split into two English expansions, with Great Encounters first. The set's blurb frames it as a battle between Dialga, Palkia and Darkrai, the three legends of The Rise of Darkrai.
What makes Great Encounters different
- Mudkip and Darkrai LV.X The reverse holo Mudkip 80 and Darkrai LV.X 104 share the top of the set in PSA 10, with Cresselia LV.X 103 third, a common's reverse holo standing level with the set's chase LV.X.
- Two Darkrai holos Darkrai received two holofoil rares in the same set, 3 by Masakazu Fukuda and 4 by Ryo Ueda, and Darkrai 4 ranks in the set's top fifteen in PSA 10.
- Movie Theme Decks The Theme Decks Eternal Time, Infinite Space and Endless Night follow Dialga, Palkia and Darkrai from the film, with Cosmos Holofoil Dialga 16 and Palkia 26 held back from Secret Wonders for their movie ties.
How Great Encounters arrived
Moonlit Pursuit released in Japan on October 26, 2007 alongside Dawn Dash. The English Great Encounters followed on February 13, 2008, fourteen weeks after Secret Wonders on November 7, 2007, with Prerelease events on the weekends of February 2 to 10 and Porygon2 49 as the promo. It launched with the Eternal Time, Infinite Space and Endless Night Theme Decks, whose Cosmos Holofoil Dialga and Palkia came from the Japanese Dialga LV.X and Palkia LV.X Constructed Standard Decks, and blisters with Magmortar, Raichu and Riolu promos followed in March 2008.
Great Encounters products
Great Encounters was sold in booster packs, booster boxes, three Theme Decks and blisters. The sealed table above tracks boxes, packs and blisters.
Collecting and grading Great Encounters
The reverse holo Mudkip 80 and Darkrai LV.X 104 lead the set in PSA 10, with Cresselia LV.X 103 behind them, then the regular Granbull 39 and Latios 23, the reverse holo Weezing 31 and Palkia 26, Seviper 52 and Dialga 16. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.
Diamond & Pearl era holofoils and reverse holos show print lines and edge wear readily, so PSA 10 copies of the LV.X cards and the top reverse holos are scarce and carry a very wide premium over PSA 9, and several commons that cost almost nothing raw reach the top ten graded. Holo, reverse holo and Cosmos Holofoil prints and the stamped cards are graded and priced separately. Sealed Great Encounters is scarce, and the sealed table above tracks what boxes, packs and blisters trade for today.
