The Sword & Shield Series ran from the base set on February 7, 2020 to Crown Zenith on January 20, 2023, covering the Galar region of Pokémon Sword and Shield and the Hisui region of Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Twelve main expansions and five special sets released in English, with the Japanese Sword & Shield era supplying the cards, usually as pairs of smaller Japanese sets combined into one English release.
The era's mechanics arrived in layers. The base set introduced Pokémon V and Pokémon VMAX, the Gigantamax and Eternamax forms that replaced the GX cards of the Sun & Moon Series. Vivid Voltage added Amazing Pokémon, Battle Styles added the Single Strike and Rapid Strike styles, Fusion Strike added a third style, and Brilliant Stars introduced Pokémon VSTAR with a once per game VSTAR Power. Astral Radiance brought Radiant Pokémon, Shiny Basic Pokémon limited to one per deck, and Lost Origin brought back the Lost Zone for the first time since Cosmic Eclipse.
Collectors remember the era for its alternate art cards. Full art Pokémon V with a second, painted alternate art print began appearing in the middle of the run, and the Trainer Gallery subsets of Brilliant Stars, Astral Radiance, Lost Origin and Silver Tempest added full art reprints of Pokémon alongside their Trainers. Evolving Skies, with the Eeveelution VMAX alternate arts and the return of Dragon types, became the most chased set of the era, and Lost Origin's Giratina V and Brilliant Stars' Charizard V followed it.
The five special sets took different shapes. Champion's Path, Shining Fates, Celebrations and Pokémon GO were sold only in branded products rather than booster boxes, Shining Fates carried a 122 card Shiny Vault, Celebrations marked the 25th anniversary of the game with reprints of classic cards, and Crown Zenith closed the era with a 70 card Galarian Gallery drawn from the Japanese VSTAR Universe. The set hubs below carry every card list, the live chase and sealed prices, and the editorial history of each release.
There are 17 published Sword & Shield era sets in this hub.
The published Sword & Shield era sets were released from February 7, 2020 to January 20, 2023.
The leading tracked chase cards in the Sword & Shield era are Gengar VMAX from Fusion Strike, Radiant Charjabug from Crown Zenith, Magikarp from Rebel Clash.
Seventeen English sets: twelve main expansions from Sword & Shield to Silver Tempest and five special sets, Champion's Path, Shining Fates, Celebrations, Pokémon GO and Crown Zenith. The Japanese era has its own hub with the smaller Japanese sets that fed them.
It opened with the Sword & Shield base set on February 7, 2020 and closed with Crown Zenith on January 20, 2023, after which the Scarlet & Violet Series began.
Pokémon V and VMAX in the base set, Amazing Pokémon in Vivid Voltage, the Single Strike and Rapid Strike styles in Battle Styles, the Fusion Strike style in Fusion Strike, Pokémon VSTAR in Brilliant Stars and Radiant Pokémon in Astral Radiance. Lost Origin brought back the Lost Zone.
Evolving Skies leads for its Eeveelution alternate arts, with Lost Origin, Brilliant Stars, Crown Zenith and Chilling Reign behind it. Each set hub ranks its own chase cards by live PSA 10 value.
Champion's Path, Shining Fates, Celebrations, Pokémon GO and Crown Zenith were sold only in branded products such as Elite Trainer Boxes, tins and collections, so their sealed tables list those products instead of display boxes.
