What Evolving Skies is

Evolving Skies is the seventh main expansion of the Sword & Shield Series. It released in English on August 27, 2021, with 203 cards in the numbered set and 34 secret rares, for 237 cards in total. Two Pokémon carry the set on the box art: Rayquaza, in its Dynamax form, and Duraludon, which appears as a Gigantamax VMAX. Around them sits the real reason collectors still talk about the set: every Eeveelution appears as a Pokémon V, most of them also appear as VMAX cards, and several received the special full art treatment that the hobby now calls alternate arts.

The set also marked the return of the Dragon type. Dragon Pokémon had been absent from the trading card game since Cosmic Eclipse at the end of the Sun & Moon Series. They came back with a distinct look: claw marks in the top right corner of the card, a gold tinted graphic beside the Weakness box, and the Dragon symbol printed behind the body text. Dragon attacks still ask for two different Energy types, but with the Fairy type retired there is no longer a Weakness printed on them.

Each English booster pack held ten cards from the set, one basic Energy card and a code card for the online game. The set carries the E regulation mark. It has rotated out of the Standard format and remains legal in Expanded.

What makes Evolving Skies different

• Seventeen alternate art cards Eleven Pokémon V and six Pokémon VMAX have a second, scene style full art in the set, each printed under its own collector number right after the standard full art. Umbreon, Espeon, Sylveon, Glaceon, Leafeon, Dragonite, Rayquaza, Noivern, Duraludon, Golurk and Medicham V all have one, and Umbreon, Sylveon, Glaceon, Leafeon, Rayquaza and Duraludon VMAX complete the list.
• Every Eeveelution as a Pokémon V Leafeon, Flareon, Vaporeon, Glaceon, Jolteon, Espeon, Sylveon and Umbreon all appear as V cards, and most also get a VMAX. A few Eeveelution cards from the Japanese source sets were not printed here and reached English players later as SWSH Black Star Promos instead.
• Dragons are back Thirty one Dragon type cards, the most of any type after Water in this set, ended a run of expansions with no Dragon Pokémon at all. Rayquaza V and VMAX, Dragonite V, Noivern V and Duraludon V and VMAX anchor the type.
• A 34 card secret rare run The secret rares split into 22 rainbow rare Pokémon VMAX and Trainers, three gold Pokémon (Froslass, Inteleon and Cresselia), six gold Trainer cards and three gold basic Energy cards.
• Built from two Japanese sets plus leftovers The English set combines Towering Perfection (also translated as Skyscraping Perfection) and Blue Sky Stream, both released in Japan on July 9, 2021, with cards from the Eevee Heroes subset and cards from Peerless Fighters, Silver Lance and Jet-Black Spirit that had not been localized in Chilling Reign.
• Stamped and exclusive versions to know Eldegoss 16, Regieleki 60 and Zoroark 103 exist as non holo Build & Battle Box exclusives. Glaceon V 40, Glaceon VMAX 41 and Cryogonal 43 carry a silver snowflake stamp from the 2023 Holiday Calendar. Pikachu 49, Pumpkaboo 76, Gourgeist 77 and Marshadow 80 have jack o' lantern stamped Trick or Trade versions, and Raihan 202 exists with a Professor Program stamp.

How the set came together

Japan received this material first. Towering Perfection and Blue Sky Stream launched on July 9, 2021 as a pair of five card packs. Towering Perfection contained no Grass, Fire or Lightning Pokémon, and Blue Sky Stream contained no Psychic, Darkness or Metal Pokémon, so the two halves were designed to be opened together. The Eevee Heroes subset had already introduced the Eeveelution V and VMAX cards to Japanese players, which is why the English set reads as an Eevee celebration even though its name and box art point at Rayquaza and Duraludon.

The English release followed on August 27, 2021, between Chilling Reign and the Celebrations anniversary set. Prerelease events, sold as Build & Battle Boxes, ran on the weekends of August 14 to 15 and August 21 to 22, 2021, the first such events at many stores in over a year after the pandemic disruption. Each Build & Battle Box included four booster packs and an Evolution pack with one of four exclusive SWSH Black Star Promos: Flaaffy, Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos or Galarian Moltres.

The set was printed for a long time after launch, and stamped versions of individual cards kept appearing in later products, from the 2023 Holiday Calendar to Trick or Trade bundles and Crown Zenith collection boxes. That long tail of printings is part of why Evolving Skies sealed product is still easy to find while the top singles are not.

Evolving Skies products and what came in them

Evolving Skies launched with two Elite Trainer Boxes. One shows Jolteon, Flareon, Umbreon and Leafeon, the other Vaporeon, Espeon, Glaceon and Sylveon. Each held eight booster packs, 65 card sleeves, four dividers, six damage counter dice, a coin flip die, two acrylic Special Condition markers, 45 basic Energy cards, a rulebook, a player's guide and a code card. Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Boxes sold on the same day with a different box design, alternate sleeve artwork, a coin, an enamel Eevee pin and ten booster packs instead of eight. There is no promo card in either version, which surprises buyers used to later sets.

Blister packs came in several forms. Three pack blisters included an Eiscue or Umbreon SWSH Black Star Promo, single pack blisters included Galarian Slowpoke or Eevee, and checklane and Stage 1 blisters reused evolution lines from Battle Styles. The Build & Battle Box and Build & Battle Stadium carried the prerelease promos above. Premium collections for Flareon VMAX, Jolteon VMAX and Vaporeon VMAX, the VMAX Dragons Premium Collection and the Dragonite V Box also carry Evolving Skies packs and appear in the sealed table with live prices.

Collecting and grading Evolving Skies

The set is a grading market as much as a collecting one. The alternate arts trade on condition, and the gap between a raw copy and a PSA 10 is what most buyers are paying for, so the live prices on this page show both. Sword & Shield era holofoil is prone to fine surface scratches and print lines, and the textured full arts show edge wear quickly, so a card that looks clean in hand can still fall short of a gem grade. Check centering front and back before submitting, because off center cuts were common in this print run.

Because Evolving Skies was reprinted in waves for years, factory sealed booster boxes and Elite Trainer Boxes remain available, and loose packs from this set were widely weighed and resold. Buy sealed from sources you trust, and treat a loose pack price that looks too good as a warning rather than a bargain.

Stamped variants matter here more than in most sets. A Trick or Trade Pikachu 49, a Holiday Calendar Glaceon VMAX 41 or a Professor Program Raihan 202 is a different collectible from the pack pulled card, and the checklist below lists the variants that carry separate prices.
