The Sun & Moon Series ran from the Sun & Moon base set on February 3, 2017 to Cosmic Eclipse on November 1, 2019, covering the Alola region of Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and, late in the run, the Kanto of Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! and the live action Detective Pikachu film. Twelve main expansions and four special sets released in English, most of them combining pairs of Japanese Sun & Moon era expansions.
Pokémon-GX defined the era: powerful cards with a GX attack usable once per game, replacing the Pokémon-EX of the XY Series. Ultra Prism and Forbidden Light added Prism Star cards, limited to one copy per deck and sent to the Lost Zone when discarded, and Team Up introduced TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX, two Pokémon on one card worth three Prize cards. TAG TEAM cards carried the series through Unbroken Bonds, Unified Minds and Cosmic Eclipse, and Hidden Fates delivered the first TAG TEAM trio, Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX.
The special sets built the era's collecting identity. Shining Legends brought Shiny Pokémon back as Shining Pokémon in October 2017, Dragon Majesty gathered Dragon types in September 2018, Detective Pikachu tied into the film with 3D rendered art in March 2019, and Hidden Fates, in August 2019, paired a 68 card main set with a 94 card Shiny Vault led by Shiny Charizard GX. None of the four was sold in booster boxes; all came through tins, collections and Elite Trainer Boxes.
Collectors chase the full art and rainbow rare GX cards, the alternate art TAG TEAM GX cards of Team Up, Unbroken Bonds and Cosmic Eclipse, and the Shiny Vault. Charizard GX from Burning Shadows, Latias & Latios GX and Gengar & Mimikyu GX from Team Up, Mewtwo GX from Shining Legends and Shiny Charizard GX from Hidden Fates lead the era's graded market. The set hubs below carry every card list, the live chase and sealed prices and the editorial history of each release.
There are 16 published Sun & Moon era sets in this hub.
The published Sun & Moon era sets were released from February 3, 2017 to November 1, 2019.
The leading tracked chase cards in the Sun & Moon era are Giratina from Lost Thunder, Latias & Latios GX from Team Up, Mewtwo GX from Shining Legends.
Sixteen English sets: twelve main expansions from Sun & Moon to Cosmic Eclipse and four special sets, Shining Legends, Dragon Majesty, Detective Pikachu and Hidden Fates.
It opened with the Sun & Moon base set on February 3, 2017 and closed with Cosmic Eclipse on November 1, 2019, after which the Sword & Shield Series began.
Pokémon-GX with once per game GX attacks in the base set, Prism Star cards in Ultra Prism, TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX in Team Up and the first TAG TEAM trio in Hidden Fates, plus the Shiny Vault subset format that Shining Fates later reused.
Hidden Fates for the Shiny Vault, Burning Shadows for Charizard GX, Team Up for the TAG TEAM alternate arts, Shining Legends for Mewtwo GX and Cosmic Eclipse for its alternate art TAG TEAMs. Each set hub ranks its own chase cards by live PSA 10 value.
Shining Legends, Dragon Majesty, Detective Pikachu and Hidden Fates were sold only in branded products, so their sealed tables list tins, collections and Elite Trainer Boxes instead of display boxes.
