About Southern Islands

What Southern Islands is

The Southern Islands Collection is a special fixed set of 18 cards released in English on July 31, 2001 by Wizards of the Coast, the localization of the Japanese Southern Islands of July 17, 1999. The cards are numbered 1 to 18 in the style of the Wizards Black Star Promos and carry no rarity symbols, because the set was sold complete rather than in packs. It came as a decorated folder holding the cards, postcards and 3 booster packs.

The artwork divides into two islands, Rainbow Island and Tropical Island, and six regions of three cards each: Sky with Mew 1, Pidgeot 2 and Onix 3, Riverside with Togepi 4, Ivysaur 5 and Raticate 6, Field of Flowers with Ledyba 7, Jigglypuff 8 and Butterfree 9, Sea with Tentacruel 10, Marill 11 and Lapras 12, Beach with Exeggutor 13, Slowking 14 and Wartortle 15 and Jungle with Lickitung 16, Vileplume 17 and Primeape 18. Each region's full picture was split into three to provide the card art, and Keiko Fukuyama drew the first nine cards and Naoyo Kimura the rest.

What makes Southern Islands different

  • The Southern Islands Mew Mew 1 is the most valuable card in the set in PSA 10 by a wide margin, with Slowking 14 and Marill 11 well behind it in second and third.
  • Neo design in English The Japanese cards use the old Base to Rocket card design, while the English release switched to the Neo Series design, so the English Slowking, Marill, Togepi and Ledyba are the only Generation II cards in that transitional form.
  • Artwork kept intact The English release is a rare example of a promotional product that kept everything from the Japanese original, including the island artwork and the full picture of each region reproduced on the folder.

How Southern Islands arrived

In Japan the Southern Islands cards released on July 17, 1999 with the second Pokémon movie, in two promo folders of 9 cards each for Rainbow Island and Tropical Island and as 3-card box sets for each region, and the collection was highly sought after there. The English Southern Islands Collection followed on July 31, 2001, between Neo Discovery on June 1, 2001 and Neo Revelation on September 21, 2001, with Wizards of the Coast compiling both islands into one folder of 18 cards.

Southern Islands products

Southern Islands was never sold in booster packs. The sealed table above tracks the collection folder.

Collecting and grading Southern Islands

Mew 1 leads the set in PSA 10, with Slowking 14 and Marill 11 behind it, then Vileplume 17, Ledyba 7, Togepi 4, Jigglypuff 8, Wartortle 15, Lapras 12 and Ivysaur 5. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.

Because the cards were sold as a fixed set inside a folder, many survive in good condition, but the 2001 Neo Series card stock still shows edge whitening and surface scratches under grading, and PSA 10 copies of the Mew carry a very wide premium over PSA 9. A complete set of 18 is a compact project, and the folder itself is tracked as the sealed product.
