About POP Series 2
What POP Series 2 is
POP Series 2 is the second special set released through Pokémon Organized Play, distributed from August 2005 and the first to follow the series' six month rota, although it stayed available for closer to eight months because POP Series 3 did not arrive until April 2006. It has 17 cards: 6 rares, 5 uncommons, 5 commons and Celebi ex 17, with Venusaur on the booster design.
The rares are the legendary beasts Entei 1, Raikou 3 and Suicune 4 alongside Pidgeot 2, Tauros 5 and Venusaur 6, and the uncommons include the Trainers Mr. Briney's Compassion 8, Multi Technical Machine 01 9, Pokémon Park 10 and TV Reporter 11. POP Series 2 was the first set of the series shown at the Pokémon TCG World Championships, in 2005, a tradition every later series followed.
What makes POP Series 2 different
- The Celebi ex holo Celebi ex 17 is the most widely distributed POP Series holographic variant, released in a Bonus Box, the Trainer's Challenge Set and the 2007 Spring Collector's Tins, and it is the most valuable card in the set in PSA 10 by a wide margin.
- Holographic versions All 7 rares exist as Cosmos Holofoil versions from the EX Holon Phantoms, EX Crystal Guardians and Legendary Beasts blisters of 2006 and a Tauros Value Pack in February 2007, and the holographic Venusaur 6, Pidgeot 2 and Entei 1 follow Celebi ex at the top of the set.
- Value Pack packs POP Series 2 boosters became far more widely available than POP Series 1 during the 2005 to 2006 season, appearing at sanctioned events and in many Value Packs.
How POP Series 2 arrived
POP Series 2 began distribution in August 2005, after EX Emerald on May 9, 2005 and ahead of EX Unseen Forces on August 22, 2005, and ran until POP Series 3 replaced it in April 2006. Its rares were reprinted as Cosmos Holofoils through the EX Holon Phantoms blisters of May 2006, the EX Crystal Guardians blisters of September 2006, the Legendary Beasts blisters of October 2006 and the 2007 Spring Collector's Tins.
POP Series 2 products
POP Series 2 was never sold in booster boxes. Packs were handed out at leagues and events, and the sealed table above tracks loose packs.
Collecting and grading POP Series 2
The holographic Celebi ex 17 leads the set in PSA 10 by a wide margin, with the holographic Venusaur 6, Pidgeot 2 and Entei 1 behind it, then Pikachu 16, the holographic Tauros 5 and Raikou 3, the regular Suicune 4 and Celebi ex 17, Ivysaur 7 and the holographic Suicune 4. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.
Organized Play packs were thin and rarely sleeved, so PSA 10 copies of every card are scarce and the gap between PSA 9 and PSA 10 is very wide. Holographic and regular prints are graded and priced separately.
