About the Web era

The web era is a single expansion, Pokémon Card★web, released on October 20, 2001 and sold exclusively through the Pokémon Center Online, which is where its name comes from. It has no English equivalent. Each pack held ten cards, nine non holofoil and one holofoil, packaged in clear plastic with a barcoded cover card carrying the set logo instead of the usual foil wrapper.

The set is made of reprints. Its 48 cards come from the Expansion Pack, Pokémon Jungle, Mystery of the Fossils and Rocket Gang along with several promotional cards, all redrawn in the card design introduced by Pokémon Card★VS, with the set symbol at bottom left and the international Pokémon card back. The reprints were updated to the game's new rules: Dragonite's Special Delivery became a Poké-Power and Rocket's Sneak Attack became a Supporter card.

Those rules are why the set matters. Pokémon Card★web split the Pokémon Power mechanic into Poké-Powers, which a player must activate, and Poké-Bodies, which are always active unless something blocks them, a division the game kept for the next decade until Abilities replaced both. It was also the first expansion to feature Supporter cards, following the Bill promotional card released the previous month.

The small print run and online only sale make the set scarce, and its chase cards are the reprints of classic holofoils in the new frame. Gengar leads the graded market, followed by Dark Charizard, Surfing Pikachu, Dark Blastoise and Magikarp. The set hub below carries the full card list, the live chase prices and the editorial history of the release.
