About Japanese Vending Series 3

What Japanese Vending Series 3 is

Vending Series 3 is the third and last run of the Japanese Expansion Sheet cards, released on November 24, 1998. Instead of booster packs, the cards came on randomized peel off sheets sold from vending machines, which is why collectors call them the Vending Machine Series. The green Series 3 run has 18 numbered sheets, each holding the same three cards plus one special card with a non standard back, most of them gag cards or cards carrying extra rules and theme deck ideas, such as Ooyama's Pikachu, the Imakuni? cards, Deck Exchange and 3 Deck Battle. The 36 Pokémon and Trainer cards run from Arbok and Nidorina to Kangaskhan, Tauros and Pokémon Tower, and the reverse of each sheet shows Pokémon from six Kanto locations.

What makes Japanese Vending Series 3 different

  • Evolution by Mail Series 3 sheets promoted the Evolution by Mail Campaign: posting a Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, Haunter or Omanyte with the Bill's PC pass card to MediaFactory before April 1999 returned a holofoil Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, Gengar or Omastar, the Masaki promos that lead this hub in PSA 10.
  • Glossy stock Vending cards were printed on glossy card stock rather than the regular matte stock, so surface scratches show readily and PSA 10 copies are scarce.

Collecting and grading Japanese Vending Series 3

The Masaki promo Gengar 94, Alakazam 65, Omastar 139 and Machamp 68 lead the hub in PSA 10, then the Series 3 Ooyama's Pikachu 25 and the glossy Cubone 104 among the set's own cards. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value. The hub tracks vending cards by National Pokédex number and shares its checklist across all three series and the Masaki promos, so check the sheet series and the card back when buying; the special Series 3 cards are the ones with the non standard back.
