About Shield

What Shield is

Shield is one half of the first expansion block of the Sword & Shield era in Japan, released on December 6, 2019 alongside Sword. It has 60 numbered cards plus 15 secret rares for 75 in total. The block introduced Pokémon V and Pokémon VMAX along with a revised card template: Stage 1 and Stage 2 Pokémon carry one or two arches between the name and HP, copyright text moved to the bottom border, and the Fairy type was retired. Shield is the Zamazenta side, with Zamazenta V, Snorlax V and VMAX, Morpeko V and VMAX and Sableye V, and Marnie as its full art Supporter. The English Sword & Shield of February 7, 2020 combined both halves into 216 cards.

What makes Shield different

  • Marnie leads the launch The full art and rainbow Marnie are the top cards of the Shield hub, ahead of every V and VMAX, a sign of how strongly the Galar rival's Supporter has held value.
  • Snorlax VMAX The set's Snorlax VMAX, the first VMAX of a Kanto Pokémon, appears in regular and secret prints and both sit in the top six of the hub.

Shield products

Collecting and grading Shield

The full art Marnie leads the hub, followed by the secret Snorlax VMAX, the rainbow Marnie, the gold Quick Ball, the full art Snorlax V and the regular Snorlax VMAX and Snorlax V. Sableye V, the rainbow and full art Zamazenta V and Morpeko VMAX follow, and Munna is the sleeper regular card. Sword & Shield era cards grade on centering and back corners more than surface.
