About Japanese Jungle

What Japanese Jungle is

Pokémon Jungle is the second expansion of the Japanese Pokémon Card Game, released on March 5, 1997 as the original print of the set that became the English Jungle of June 16, 1999. It has 48 cards: 16 holofoil rares, 16 uncommons and 16 commons, based on Pokémon Red, Blue and Green and said to take place in the Kanto Safari Zone. The English release grew to 64 cards because Wizards of the Coast added non holofoil prints of the 16 holo rares, so the Japanese set is the tighter original, with every rare a holofoil.

The holofoils include the three Eevee evolutions Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon, Snorlax, Kangaskhan, Pidgeot, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Nidoqueen, Vileplume, Victreebel, Venomoth, Scyther, Pinsir, Electrode and Mr. Mime, and the set adds Pikachu, Eevee and Meowth among its commons. The Japanese booster box art shows an Exeggutor with an elongated neck that resembles the later Alolan form.

What makes Japanese Jungle different

  • The Eeveelution holos Vaporeon 134 is the most valuable card in the set in PSA 10, with Flareon 136 third and Jolteon 135 fourth, the original prints of the three Eevee evolutions that anchor the English Jungle as well.
  • Snorlax The Snorlax 143 holo by Ken Sugimori ranks second in the set in PSA 10, close behind Vaporeon and ahead of both Flareon and Jolteon.
  • Every rare a holo With no non holo rares, 16 of the 48 cards are holofoils, and commons such as Pikachu 25, Exeggutor 103, Nidorina 30 and Meowth 52 still reach the set's top fifteen in PSA 10.

How Japanese Jungle arrived

Pokémon Jungle followed the Japanese Base Set of October 20, 1996 on March 5, 1997 and was itself followed by Mystery of the Fossils on June 21, 1997. Its cards reached English on June 16, 1999 as Jungle, the second Wizards of the Coast expansion, with the 1st Edition print run accidentally including the extremely rare 1st Edition Promo Pikachu, and other language releases followed in February 2000. The Japanese set is tracked here as its own hub because its prints are the first prints of every Jungle card.

Japanese Jungle products

Pokémon Jungle was sold in Japanese booster packs and booster boxes. The sealed table above tracks boxes and both pack sizes.

Collecting and grading Japanese Jungle

Vaporeon 134 leads the set in PSA 10, with Snorlax 143 second, then Flareon 136, Jolteon 135, Pikachu 25, Kangaskhan 115, Exeggutor 103, Nidorina 30, Pidgeot 18 and Butterfree 12. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.

The hub tracks Japanese Jungle cards by National Pokédex number rather than a printed set number, because the 1997 cards carry no collector numbers. Japanese cards from 1997 show holo scratches, edge wear and print lines readily, so PSA 10 copies of the holos are scarce and carry a very wide premium over PSA 9. Sealed Japanese Jungle is scarce, and the sealed table above tracks what boxes and packs trade for today.
