About Facing a New Trial
What Facing a New Trial is
Facing a New Trial is the second subset of the Sun & Moon era in Japan, released on April 21, 2017 as an Enhanced Expansion Pack that builds on the second main expansion, Islands Await You and Alolan Moonlight. It has 49 numbered cards plus 17 secret rares for 66 in total. Every card in the Japanese subset is printed as a mirror holofoil, and the non secret cards other than Pokémon GX carry no rarity symbol at all. Darkrai GX, Tapu Fini GX and Lycanroc GX headline, with Acerola and Sophocles as full art Supporters. Its cards later joined the two Japanese halves of Burning Shadows in the English release.
What makes Facing a New Trial different
- Mirror holo on every card Unlike a regular expansion, all cards in the Japanese subset are mirror holofoil, and commons and uncommons have no rarity symbol, which makes the set easy to spot in a binder.
- Acerola's debut The full art Acerola, the Alolan Trial Captain whose Supporter became a staple, is the top card of the hub ahead of the rainbow rare Darkrai GX.

Collecting and grading Facing a New Trial
The full art Acerola leads the hub, followed by the rainbow rare and full art Darkrai GX, then Wailord, the full art Sophocles and Slowking. Alolan Sandshrew, Slowpoke and Sableye are the popular regular cards, and the rainbow Lycanroc GX rounds out the secrets. Mirror holofoil shows surface scratches under angled light more than a plain card does, so check the whole face before grading any of the regular cards.
