About 25th Anniversary Collection
What the 25th Anniversary Collection is
The 25th Anniversary Collection is the seventh subset of the Japanese Sword & Shield era, released on October 22, 2021 with the set code S8a to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Pokémon Card Game, which launched in Japan on October 20, 1996. It has 28 cards in the numbered set plus 2 secret cards, Professor's Research 29 and Mew 30, and it is the Japanese counterpart of the English Celebrations of October 8, 2021.
The set opens with Pikachu 1, Mew 2 and Professor's Research 3, then parades Legendary Pokémon from across the franchise, from Ho-Oh 4 and Lugia 5 through Groudon 6, Kyogre 7, Dialga 8, Palkia 9, Reshiram 10 and Zekrom 11 to Solgaleo 16, Lunala 17, Zacian V 18 and Zamazenta V 19, before a run of Pikachu cards: Pikachu V 20, Surfing Pikachu V 21 and VMAX 22, Flying Pikachu V 23 and VMAX 24 and the four card Pikachu V-UNION from 25 to 28.
What makes the 25th Anniversary Collection different
- The secret Mew Mew 30 is the set's top card among its own prints in PSA 10, a secret rare take on the Pokémon that also opens the set at Mew 2.
- Surfing and Flying Pikachu The set revives two Original Series ideas as Surfing Pikachu V 21 and VMAX 22 and Flying Pikachu V 23 and VMAX 24, and all four rank in the set's top ten in PSA 10.
- No rarity symbols Every non secret card except the Pokémon V was printed without a rarity symbol, and each card also exists as a reverse holo, with the reverse holo Pikachu 1 ranking third in the set.
How the 25th Anniversary Collection arrived
The 25th Anniversary Collection released in Japan on October 22, 2021, two days after the anniversary of the game's launch on October 20, 1996, four weeks after Fusion Arts on September 24, 2021 and six weeks before VMAX Climax on December 3, 2021. The English Celebrations had arrived on October 8, 2021 with a 25 card Classic Collection of replica cards that the Japanese set does not share. Like the English set, it was sold only in its own branded products.
25th Anniversary Collection products
The 25th Anniversary Collection was sold in Japanese booster packs and booster boxes and in a Special Collection Box. The sealed table above tracks all three.
Collecting and grading the 25th Anniversary Collection
Mew 30 leads the set's own prints in PSA 10, with the reverse holo Pikachu 1 and Mew 2 behind it, then Surfing Pikachu VMAX 22, Surfing Pikachu V 21, the reverse holo Lugia 5, Flying Pikachu VMAX 24, the Pikachu V-UNION 27 and Flying Pikachu V 23. The live chase list above ranks every tracked card by PSA 10 value.
Japanese print quality keeps PSA 10 rates high, so graded premiums are modest and concentrate on the secret Mew and the reverse holos of Pikachu and Mew. Regular and reverse holo prints are graded and priced separately. Sealed 25th Anniversary Collection remains obtainable, and the sealed table above tracks what boxes, packs and the Special Collection Box trade for today.
