About the Legendary Collection era

The Legendary Collection Series consists of one set. Legendary Collection released on May 24, 2002 between Neo Destiny and Expedition Base Set, with no Japanese equivalent, as a 110 card reprint set composed of cards from Base Set, Jungle, Fossil and Team Rocket. Wizards of the Coast published it in the last year of its license.

Its place in the hobby comes from one idea. Legendary Collection introduced Reverse Holofoil prints, cards that carry holofoil across the whole card except the artwork window, and every card in the set exists in a reverse holofoil version with a distinctive fireworks like pattern. The reverse holofoil Charizard, Gengar, Mewtwo, Snorlax, Gyarados, Dark Blastoise and even commons such as Pikachu, Abra and Eevee trade far above their regular prints, and the reverse holofoil set is one of the hardest parallel sets of the era to complete in high grade. The set also introduced box toppers, jumbo sized versions of cards from the expansion packed in the display boxes.

Because the set is reprints, its regular cards are the affordable way to own the Base Set and Fossil holofoils, and its reverse holofoils are the expensive way. The Charizard reprint is the most traded card, the reverse holofoil Pikachu and Gengar sit at the top of the graded market, and the sealed product is scarce after two decades. The set hub below carries the full card list with regular and reverse holofoil rows, the live chase and sealed prices and the editorial history of the release.

  • The first reverse holofoils Legendary Collection introduced reverse holofoil prints, holofoil across the card except the artwork window, in a fireworks like pattern used only in this set. Every card in the set has a reverse holofoil version.
  • A reprint set with no Japanese twin The 110 cards are reprints from Base Set, Jungle, Fossil and Team Rocket, and the set has no Japanese equivalent.
  • Box toppers Legendary Collection introduced box toppers, jumbo sized versions of cards from the expansion packed with display boxes.
  • Reverse holofoil chase cards The reverse holofoil Pikachu, Gengar, Charizard, Mewtwo, Snorlax and Gyarados lead the graded market, and the reverse holofoil parallel set is one of the hardest of the era to complete in high grade.
