Black Star Promos are the promotional cards of the English Pokémon Trading Card Game. They are never found in booster packs; they were given out at tournaments and special events or packed with merchandise, and every one carries a black star with the word PROMO where an expansion symbol would normally sit, which is where the name comes from. Slabfolio groups them into ten hubs, one per numbering series.
Wizards of the Coast produced a total of 53 numbered promotional cards between 1999 and 2003 before losing the license, all of them earlier Japanese promos or special set cards except the two Mew prints from the Japanese Fossil expansion. The promos tied to Mewtwo Strikes Back carry a gold foil Kids WB Presents stamp, and the Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres promos for The Power of One use different art from their Japanese All Nippon Airways counterparts. Nintendo Black Star Promos followed from 2003 during the EX Series, and the DP Black Star Promos of 2007 were the first series to carry a numbering prefix, DP, which changed to HGSS in 2010 and then followed each series: BW, XY, SM, SWSH, SVP and MEP.
The series grew with the game. The XY promos reached 211 cards, the SM promos 248 and the SWSH promos 307, because the modern Elite Trainer Boxes, tins, collection boxes, Build & Battle Boxes and blisters each carry their own numbered promo. The SVP promos of the Scarlet & Violet Series and the MEP promos of the Mega Evolution Series continue that pattern, and the set hubs for those expansions name the promo that came in each product.
Collectors chase the promos tied to films, events and premium products: the Wizards era movie promos, the DP and HGSS era event cards, the full art and alternate art promos of the modern series and the stamped prerelease and staff versions. Each promo hub below carries the full numbered list, the live chase prices and the editorial notes for that series.
There are 10 published Black Star Promos era sets in this hub.
The published Black Star Promos era sets were released from July 1, 1999 to September 1, 2025.
The leading tracked chase cards in the Black Star Promos era are Giratina from BW Black Star Promos, Kyogre EX from Nintendo Black Star Promos, Lugia from HGSS Black Star Promos.
Promotional cards of the English game that carry a black star reading PROMO in place of an expansion symbol. They are never found in booster packs and come from events, films and products such as tins, collection boxes and Elite Trainer Boxes.
Ten in this hub: Wizards Black Star Promos, Nintendo Black Star Promos and the prefixed DP, HGSS, BW, XY, SM, SWSH, SVP and MEP series, one for each era of the game.
53 numbered cards, produced between 1999 and 2003 before Wizards of the Coast lost the license. All were earlier Japanese promos or special set cards except the two Mew prints from the Japanese Fossil expansion.
The SWSH Black Star Promos, with 307 numbered cards, followed by the SM series at 248 and the XY series at 211. The SVP and MEP series are still growing as products release.
